  • Private garden with a hammock and hot tub; shops 15 minutes’ drive
Always wanted to spend some time walking and talking with the animals? Channel your inner Dr Dolittle when you book in at Stay Balanced, and discover the hills and valleys of Monmouthshire from a location with friendly alpacas. If you fancy getting to know these furry beauties a bit better, for an additional charge, you can walk, feed and also take afternoon tea with them – they get hay, you get the fizz and cake. Your accommodation at Stay Balanced is in a shepherd’s hut, kept warm with a woodburning stove and stylishly furnished with a comfy double bed (with linen sheets, result), a sofa, dining space, and a kitchen corner with everything you need to conjure up simple meals. Outside is a private garden with a hammock for snooze time and a hot tub for soaking away any residual cares. This area is fenced off to keep any canine companions safe – while they are very welcome on site, please be mindful that owners Gavin and Nilesh have accumulated two dogs, chickens and ducks of their own as well as the alpacas, so your pets need to be on a lead around their four-acre smallholding. The centre of Newport is 15 minutes’ drive if you need stock up at supermarkets, while Cardiff’s gourmet food market (closed Sunday) is 35 minutes away by car.

The Blondin Cush 1 bedroom shepherd's hut

Liked: Relaxing, tranquil, beautiful scenery, exceptional hosts, well equipped, clean, amazing, I mean what more can I say. This was a solo trip for some away time to relax and take a trip down memory lane having grown up in south Wales, this accommodation was perfect, so well thought out in every single detail, comfortable, cosy and really wonderful, Gavin and Nilesh have thought through every single detail to perfection, I had everything I needed to make my stay as perfect as I was hoping it would be. Will be back again for another visit. The alpacas were so lovely to wake up too and so sweet coming nose to nose with my dog. Thank you for such a wonderful few days. I loved every minute of it.

The Blondin Cush 1 bedroom shepherd's hut

Liked: Had a lovely relaxing time, just what we needed. The site is mainly a small holding. There are ducks, chickens and Alpacas. We took our dog that is very chill with other animals and it was a very good experience. The accommodation was very clean and tidy. Everything was eco friendly and good quality. Very friendly couple and thank you for making our stay so chilled. Lots to do in the area especially with a dog. We took her on the Goldcliff costal wall walk in the morning then went in to town to buy food for the evening. Also visited the RSPB nature reserve in the afternoon and had a fab walk looking at all the wetlands that have been reclaimed.

The Blondin Cush 1 bedroom shepherd's hut

Liked: Gavin & Nilesh have carefully thought out every detail of this beautiful shepherds hut they have created on their amazing land and couldn’t have been more welcoming. We had a lovely couple of nights away and the hot tub was a highlight, overlooking the grazing Alpacas! There’s a lovely little walk to a quaint village pub and the hut was close enough to the town / local attractions, but still felt far enough off the beaten track, surrounded by nature. We also really liked the fact that they use eco products and have created the space with sustainability in mind. We look forward to visiting again.

Disliked: Nothing.

Local attractions

Stay close to base camp and go birdwatching at RSPB Newport Wetlands (five minutes’ drive), where you might spot a heron or two. However, you might have to leave them behind if you embark on long-distance rambles along the Wales Coast Path (10 minutes), or go hiking through the trees at Cwmcarn Forest (half an hour). There are lush water gardens, rockeries and follies to admire at Dewstow Gardens and Grottoes (20 minutes), and woodland sculpture trails at Fourteen Locks Canal Centre (25 minutes, look out for those herons again). You might also like to sneak over the border into England and have a nose around the spectacular Gothic-era facades of Cistercian Tintern Abbey (half an hour). There are two 18-hole golf courses within 20 minutes’ drive, and should you hit a rainy day (always a possibility in the UK), make a beeline for the big screens at Cineworld Newport Wales - Spytty Park (five minutes).
