  • Quiet rural wild camping site two miles from the Wye Valley
  • On Cycle Route 42; 15 minutes to Offa’s Dyke Path
  • Farm shop and pub nearby; dogs allowed
Whether it’s cycling or walking that takes your fancy or crazy castles and ancient woodlands, The Strawmouse Field will let you in on the Monmouthshire countryside and its attractions. A five-minute drive from the Wye Valley Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, you’ll also be well-based for canoeing, cycling or walking – and perhaps Offa Dyke’s Path (15 minutes’ drive) or Cycle Route 42 (direct access from site). Here, you’ll be putting down roots with views of the Brecon Beacons and the Severn Estuary. This is a wild camping site on a working cattle farm, so it's a quiet patch with basic facilities so as to encourage wildlife in the grassland meadows. There is a portable toilet on site that's cleaned regularly and stocked with toilet rolls and soap. There’s no rubbish disposal here so you'll need to take away whatever you generate to preserve the natural surroundings for all. Perhaps you might want to weave some tasty local produce into your mealtimes on this break. Handily, there’s a farm shop five minutes’ drive away. The local village has a pub within five minutes’ drive of the site too, while Chepstow (15 minutes’ drive) is packed with more friendly eateries. You'll know you've arrived when you see the Welsh flag at the entrance. Pick whichever pitch is free and start setting up – there's no need to book in with the site team first.

Liked: Although the Strawmouse field offers only basic amenities, the portaloo was the cleanest I've ever experienced and the fresh spring water was delicious! The relaxed nature of the site and the casual checking in and out times was perfect for our group of 6 and just what we needed after a weekend canoeing on the a river Wye. We had one camper van and two tents which we were able to arrange into a wonderful camp. Lots of lovely pubs and places to explore nearby. Many thanks, we will be back and recommending to our friends :)

Disliked: Would be a bonus to have a shower - even just a simple outdoor one that you can fill with spring water and heat in the sun

Liked: Nothing apart from when we left.

Disliked: • Not suitable for dog owners as advertised, local dogs are free running and not under control - we were bothered at 5am by a local dog, who entered our closed tent crawling under the flysheet, disturbing our puppy sleeping, so my partner had to stay 1 hour in the field being pulled around by our puppy while the other dog run laps around him. We couldn't lock him in the tent as the dog could come in, nor in the car as they started barking at each other and considering the terrible night we had we didn't wanna contribute to it with ulterior noise. We couldn't set our puppy free as there are roads around, and a fireplace still smoking from other campers that didn't stop partying until 5am. The dog also urinated on our tent and car. There are also no suitable dog walking areas as the field is surrounded by narrow country lanes for miles. • No drinking water, not even a hose provided on the hottest weekend this year • Minimal facilities means a portaloo, that's it • No bin provided • We were lucky enough to have a really nice old man as our neighbour unfortunately he had a bunch of what I can best describe as uni lads next to him that decided to start drinking before we arrived in the evening and didn't stop until 5:30 am with loud music until half 4 in the morning, a football game at around 5am, screams and various obscenities to make sure we could all enjoy a lovely night of rest in nature. They kept up our puppy all night which in turn kept us up and we couldn't put together a continuous hour of sleep during the whole night. Then the dog decided to come and bother our puppy so yeah... There was no intervention from the owners and considering it was a large group of drunk out of their mind men we didn't think we could really intervene. We had a weekend of hiking with our puppy planned that we had to give up on as it would have been cruel to take the puppy on after spending the night restless, awake and sometimes scared. This place was the worst night I've ever had in my life and ruined our whole anniversary weekend, avoid like the plague. • The ground is rocky so bring a mallet for the pegs and to bang on your head so you might be able to get some sleep.
