  • Fully serviced touring pitches behind a pub in rural Monmouthshire
  • Abergavenny 15 minutes’ drive; Hereford 45 minutes
  • Dog-friendly; Offa’s Dyke Path runs past the site
Spending your holiday touring around South Wales and need a place to stay – perhaps within stumbling distance of a refreshing pint of ale? Then The Hog’s Head might just be the place for you. This family-run site has a number of hardstanding touring pitches at the back of a traditional pub in rural Monmouthshire, a 15-minute drive from the historic market town of Abergavenny. The proximity to the pub is only one of several reasons why staying here is a top idea. Your four-legged companion is also a welcome guest. The fully serviced pitches with water and drainage hook-up points sweeten the deal, alongside a toilet block and hot-water showers. There are heaps of interesting trails to explore in the area, starting with the long-distance Offa’s Dyke Path, which goes just past the site. You can follow it to the River Trothy, the forested banks of which are home to colourful butterflies, or pick it up by the medieval Whitecastle fortress (10 minutes’ drive or 20 minutes’ walk along a narrow country lane). All the while, you’ll be gazing at distant views of Sugar Loaf and other peaks in Brecon Beacons National Park. If you prefer to explore the area on horseback, there are a couple of stables within a half-hour drive of the site. In addition, you can practise your swing at several local golf clubs, or book a tour (with tasting) at the White Castle Vineyard (10 minutes). Please note that the site's pub is wet trade only, and does not serve food.

Lovely, quiet country spot with brilliant facilities. Friendly hosts, great views. Spacious pitches with services. A bit of a tight drive in, and some miss dishwashing. Highly recommended for the welcome and quality.

Fully-serviced hardstanding pitch

Liked Lovely Campsite with lots of space between pitches in a remote location.
Toilets/Showers were lovely and clean
Pub on site
Dog Friendly

Disliked It was a lovely site so struggled to find a downside.
To be fussy, an email/notification to confirm to turn up and pick any pitch would have been great, but we called the number on arrival and it was sorted that way

Liked When we arrived at the site we found that our tent was damaged. Dale very kindly offered us the use of one of his pods at no extra charge, he is a true gent. The pod was very cosy with a comfortable bed, microwave and kettle a definite upgrade on our tent!
The bathroom facilities are immaculately clean and by far the nicest I have ever used while camping. The site is in a lovely location, it’s quiet and peaceful. It’s situated close to Offa’s Dyke & a short walk from White Castle. There’s plenty to see and do in the local area only a short drive away.
Dale also runs the site’s pub (does he ever sleep?!) where we enjoyed a few drinks sitting outside in the sun. We had a lovely time and will definitely be back. Thank you Dale xx

Fully-serviced hardstanding pitch

Liked The site is a beautiful spot with excellent toilet/shower facilities.
We spent the evening in the pub with the owner who was very friendly and knowledgeable about the local area. His poor jokes were the only let down but still entertaining.
Would highly recommend this site.

Fully-serviced hardstanding pitch

Liked This was our first outing in our new campervan and we couldn't have picked a nicer place. A very friendly family run business, on a working Sheep farm, in a peaceful and secluded setting with a great pub on site. Dale and his sister were very welcoming and we will definitely be back. We even got treated to a beautiful full moon on our second night....however, I can't finish my review without complementing whoever looks after the shower/toilet block, it was exceptional

Disliked Absolutely nothing!

Liked This is an absolute hidden gem of a site, run by Dale and Nicola who are excellent hosts. With superior shower and washroom facilities it rates highly on our list of sites visited worldwide.
The banter with yourselves and locals in your bar of an evening certainly added to our enjoyment and we’ll be back for a pint soon.

Liked Dale was extremely welcoming and friendly. Gave us a tour of the facilities and took my partner to see his American pickup truck.
The site was very clean and the pitches were spacious and level.
Rural and peaceful.
The pub was very friendly; good beer at great prices.
Toilets were extremely clean and the showers were hot
The road to the site is narrow but easily managed.

Local attractions

The imposing remains of Raglan Castle (20 minutes’ drive), which was partially destroyed during the English Civil War, hint at the former grandeur of this moated fortress built in the 1430s. Check out the thick walls, the Grand Staircase and the Tudor panel in the visitor centre, then have a picnic on the lawn. Head to the Wye Valley Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (half an hour) for epic walks at places like Symonds Yat, where you can get sweeping views of the River Wye. If you’re into watersports, there are numerous outfits renting out paddleboards and canoes, or check out the Wye Valley Butterfly Zoo. Hereford (45 minutes) is renowned for its elegant cathedral, home of the Mappa Mundi, a centuries-old map of the world decorated with drawings of strange peoples and mythical creatures. The Museum of Cider has ancient presses and other brewing paraphernalia, or you can visit The Weir Garden, a National Trust property on the River Wye.
