  • Single bell tent on an alpaca farm two miles from Abergavenny
  • Black Mountains views; 15 minutes' drive to Sugar Loaf or Blorenge
  • Easy access from A40; 10-minute walk to the Hardwick gastropub
You’ll become quite used to spotting sheep when you travel around this part of Monmouthshire, but there’s something rather different in store at Cwtch Glamping: this sweet little place is part of an alpaca farm where the woolly creatures wander around freely and enjoy meeting new guests. The curious neighbours aren’t the only thing that makes this site stand out – it’s also in a rather enviable location a couple of miles from Abergavenny and on the cusp of the Brecon Beacons National Park. There are lots of places to get out for a hike or a wild swim nearby, and easy access from the A40 for those times when you’d like to explore further afield. The bell tent you’ll be staying in is rather lovely too – there’s just the one here, so you’ll have the run of the two-acre site and plenty of space from which to enjoy the fabulous views of the Black Mountains. It’s been kept quite simple in style, but you’ll have beds made up ready for your arrival and there’s space for whatever other bits you’d like to bring along to furnish your new digs. The picnic table outside is a top spot for an evening spent watching the sunset with some snacks and a glass of wine – such provisions are easy to come by at the independent shops in Abergavenny. If you’d like to boost your glamping break even further though, take yourselves on the 10-minute walk to the Hardwick, a gastropub that’s well known as one of the best places to eat in Wales (you’ll need to book ahead for this treat…)

Local attractions

Foodies often gravitate towards Abergavenny – this is a town that takes its eating seriously, with several top-notch restaurants, independent cafés and delis and a market hall, plus a food festival in early autumn. To accompany whatever tasty delights you pick up here, you may like to pick up a bottle of locally produced wine after a tour of White Castle Vineyard (15 minutes’ drive). Working up an appetite for all this should be easy enough – the site is well set for all sorts of hikes in the Black Mountains, including the Usk Valley Walk and climbs up the Blorenge and the Sugar Loaf (both 15 minutes away). A dip in Keeper’s Pond (15 minutes) should cool you off after mountain adventures. For more leisurely days out, take a stroll around the ruins of Raglan Castle (15 minutes) or learn about the area’s past on a visit to Blaenavon Ironworks and Big Pit Coal Museum (20 minutes). Linda Vista Gardens (10 minutes) has plenty of colour to keep green-fingered types happy, and there are several golf courses in the vicinity too.
