Walk into the hills directly from site (added by manager 08 Aug 2019)
Late spring site view!!
A beautiful late spring day here on site!!
Our chillout firepit area with the old refurbished railway truck viewed from down by the stream.

  • Adults-only site with views of Brecon Beacons and the Black Mountain
  • A 15-minute drive from Pontardawe and 35 minutes from Swansea
  • Dog-friendly spot with direct access to hill and woodland walks
If you’re in need of some rest and relaxation, park up for peaceful stays at Brynglas Retreat, where two acres of rural streamside bliss awaits, with spectacular mountain views thrown in too. Less than five minutes’ drive from the south Wales village of Tairgwaith, the promise of an utterly serene stay is boosted by an over-25s policy, rules against loud music, and an old railway carriage being put to good use as a chillout zone. The site’s well placed for scenic rambling explores (canine pal in tow if you have one) along woodland paths and into the Brecon Beacons National Park, a 10-minute drive or easy ramble from site. For heady challenges, it’s six miles as the crow flies from base to the top of the Black Mountain – with woodpeckers, red kites and cuckoos to spot along the way – and there’s direct access to a hilly wander among windmills if that’s too much of a challenge. When food time rolls round, a communal barbecue and firepit are to hand; just bring along your charcoal or smokeless fuel (if you bring logs, please ensure they are seasoned well to reduce smoke). A grocery shop, pub serving food, chip shop and takeaway are five minutes' drive away (or a half-hour walk) in Gwaun Cae Gurwen and major supermarkets are 15 minutes away in Ammanford and Pontardawe. Want to share the wealth? Place any leftover meats on the site’s red kite feeding table to get a bird show with your meal. There is a toilet facility on site, but please note that this may be closed in winter due to frosted pipes.

Liked: We had a lovely night away from home in the cabin on site . This place is beautiful we went purely for some peace and quiet and a cosy accommodation and that’s exactly what we got . Andy is such a lovely host and told us all about the local walks around the area and takeaways that would deliver food up to the gate of the site . We however brought food to cook as we weren’t sure we could do this ! We went for a relaxing night having worked a lot lately so didn’t do much walking but enjoyed the cosy cabin and loved the binoculars to study the mountains with the sheep , horses and wildlife . We will most definitely return to this hidden gem.

Disliked: Nothing at all to dislike

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: The campsite was in a lovely location, just far enough away from everything but still able to access what we needed with ease. There are walks right opposite the site too. The little railway carriage was a welcome shelter from the wind and rain to prep and eat our food, with the fire pit too. The owner was incredibly friendly and nothing was too much trouble, even helping us with refreezing our ice blocks whilst borrowing his and having wood available for a fire. There is no bin but Andy will dispose of the rubbish afterwards, just need to separate it for recycling The facilities were always clean, and the shower was free with actual hot water!

Disliked: There was a dog that would bark/howl through the night, our dog eventually got used to it but it still woke us up on a number of occasions. If you have a reactive dog or are a light sleeper it might make it difficult The drinking water has a very odd and off putting smell so we didn't use it, but it might not bother others.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: The site was laid out really nicely with privacy between each pitch. Andy (owner) was friendly and very helpful regarding local walks and freezing ice blocks, genuinely felt like he was happy to do whatever he could to make our stay pleasant. Fantastic walks from the site gate, with main roads being far enough away that road noise is rarely heard. Dog friendly and a really safe enclosed site. Facilities were cleaned daily and though basic are more than sufficient if you’re not looking for a 5* hotel, with single toilet, shower and washing up area. Being ‘over 25’s only’ meant that it’s a quiet site with music etc to be kept at a minimum, absolutely perfect for those wishing to disconnect and get back to nature (the sounds of which are carried all over the site by the stream that runs around/through it).

Disliked: When we visited the site was quiet with only one other tent on site, but when busy only having one toilet may be an issue.

Liked: Everything. There is nothing negative I could say about this site or hosts. Andy goes above and beyond for all guests, its clear he truly loves his site, and so do I. As a solo female traveller in a small tent I felt safe and secure the entire visit, Andy was so helpful charging my phone for me. The toilet and shower were kept spotless. Absolutely gorgeous site, I understand the retreat in the name, its a semi wild area, with lots of wildlife, the stream running by and through the site is the perfect lullaby. The shepherds hut and campfire spot were fab additions, the site was full yet as it’s so small we had the hut and fire spot to ourselves. I, and my aching body, throughly enjoyed snoozing in the hammock beside the tent, exquisite touch with the sound of the running stream only feet away for total relaxation of mind body and soul. The views surrounding the site are nothing short of phenomenal. A very happy camper and I will be returning, and I recommend anyone and everyone to check out Brynglas Retreat.

Local attractions

As you’re here to unwind, how about a visit to Clydach town (25 minutes by car) for canal walks and a stroll around the RSPB Cwm Clydach nature reserve? Or get some good-for-the-soul fresh air at the 200-acre Gnoll Estate Country Park (30 minutes). Combine treks with culture and spend some time marvelling at the area’s many historical landmarks. Carreg Cennen Castle (25 minutes); the castle, abbey and gatehouse in Neath (half an hour); and Dinefwr Castle (35 minutes) are good places to start. For the soothing sound of tumbling water, a collection of waterfalls can be easily reached – aim for Aberdulais Falls (30 minutes), Henrhyd Falls (30 minutes) or Melincourt Waterfall (40 minutes). Days can also be well spent at Cefn Coed Colliery Museum (35 minutes), which tells the story of coal mining on a former site; the National Botanic Garden of Wales (35 minutes), a must-see for the green-fingered; and the caves at the National Showcaves Centre (35 minutes) – there are waterfalls here, too.
