Bach Wen: Pitches

General

  • Secluded seaside site on the coast 20 minutes' drive from Caernarfon
  • A 20-minute drive to Snowdonia walks; half an hour to Portmeirion
  • Access to a private beach, with sea views across the site

Ever dreamt of having access to a private beach? Then you'll need to book a break at Bach Wen. On the Gwynedd coast just outside the village of Clynnog-Fawr, this secluded seaside spot will make that idea a reality.

It’s just the place for relaxing holidays, with plenty of space for all guests to spread out, and a sizeable paddock for kids and dogs to scamper about. And yes indeed, its own beach area too – simply follow the stream to get to the sands for days of swimming, kayaking, fishing or hikes along the coast path.

Spot the sea while on site too if you prefer to stay put – the views are particularly stunning at sunset, and even better again with a cold beer or glass of wine in hand from the on-site bar (you’ll just need to arrange this a little bit in advance to make sure someone’s around to do the pouring honours). Those of you who’d rather pick up your own food and potions, there’s a little supermarket five minutes’ walk away in the village.

Those cold drinks may well be much welcomed by those aiming to pack plenty of activity into their break here – this location at the top of the Llŷn Peninsula means that there’s much to explore nearby. Head into the nearby Snowdonia National Park for hikes, mountain biking and an adventure park, soak up the history of Caernarfon, 20 minutes’ drive away, or bounce around the numerous beaches of the peninsula.

Lovely spot, fantastic views of the sea from pitch 1. 7 year old loved the play frame and secret swing. Great pebbly beach for exploring.

Toilets etc all clean. The showers have hooks!! More than 1! There’s a freezer (more fridge like) for cold stuff.

The bar area was open when we there (Sat only) which is a lovely spot. Lots of space for kids to play.

Be warned it can get VERY windy.

There’s a well stocked Co-Op in Pen y Groes for supplies.

The Glade looked like a romantic spot but possibly a pain to move stuff from car park.

We loved the pod and the sea views. The pod felt quite secluded (which we loved) and the bed was pretty comfortable. The beach is beautiful and there was hardky anyone there. It is truly a great place if you like sunsets. People running this place are lovely and helpful. If you run out frob vasic stuff there is a shop 10 minutes walk away wrom the farm. There is 4G coverage everywhere on site. This place is a hidden gem

Seclusion of pitches meant it was really quiet at night as you don't have neighbours in the pods or The Glade tent pitch. The scenery is outstanding!

    Disliked:

Do not book The Glade if you have a lot of camping gear and if you are not quite fit as you have to transport ALL your equipment to the pitch by trollies which are in very poor condition. One had flat tyres and the others had wheels that turned in making it very difficult to go in a straight line. There is also a steep(ish) incline and decline that you need to navigate. We loved the seclusion but not being able to unpack with your car at the side made it very difficult and we probably wouldn't book again because of it - but each to their own...

    -The pod log burner
    -Friendly host
    -Nice shower

    Disliked:

-The trolley needed to carry things from car to pod had 2 flat tyres
-Lock to pod wouldn't work on 2nd day, informed the host who said she would have to order a new lock from amazon or go to screwfix. Host stated it was very safe to leave our stuff in pod or we could keep it in the reception caravan. This concerned me as no disclaimer was provided to be signed for the leaving of property in an unlocked pod (hence we trudged all the luggage we didn't want to risk getting stolen back to our car to lock up until new lock provided later in day)
    - Wood for wood burner was available at £5 a basket, however no basket/baskets were visibly available to carry the wood until the last night we were there.
    - Not all the toilet seats were attached to the toilets
-Cups provided in pods disgustingly stained
-Outdoor light to pod not working

From the manager...

Thankyou for all of these comments which of course will be dealt with straight away. There are a number of trolleys and wheelbarrows so I'm sorry that you used the one with the flat tyres. I'm glad the host was able to help you and it is always useful to get feedback.

Local attractions

It’s quiet at the nearby Trefor beach (10 minutes' drive) and that’s part of what makes it such a fine spot for sea fishing. You might get hooked on all sorts of watersports locally too, particularly in Abersoch (half an hour), where surfing and wakeboarding are some of the ways to get your hair wet, or the 'Whistling Sands' at Porthor beach (45 minutes), which has fab surfing conditions.

Away from the sand, first-timers could put their balance to the test with a lesson on the surf lagoon at Adventure Parc Snowdonia (an hour) too. Of course, there are all sorts of other activities all around the Snowdonia National Park (20 minutes), so when you’re looking for a way to wind things down, perhaps with a lighter walk, you could take in the turrets of Caernarfon Castle (20 minutes) or the smaller Bryn Bras Castle (20 minutes).

Back to the coast, though, fishing villages are a fancy way to spend the way pottering around the shore. Porthdinllaen (20 minutes) has a beach and the popular Tŷ Coch Inn, while Portmeirion (half an hour) is modelled on Italian architecture, with sub-tropical gardens and a splendid spa, shops and eateries.

Must see

  • Caernarfon Castle (14.3 kilometres)
  • Criccieth Castle (15.0 kilometres)
  • Welsh Highland Railway (Porthmadog) (18.9 kilometres)

National Trust

  • Plas Newydd Country House and Gardens (22.2 kilometres)
  • Plas yn Rhiw (27.8 kilometres)
