The river dysynni bordering the site

  • Relaxed family-run working farm in Eryri (Snowdonia) National Park
  • Excellent area for hillwalking; two seaside resorts within 10 miles
  • Bordered by a river; 55 minutes' walk away from a pub in Abergynolwyn
Rock up to this place for a stay among stunning Welsh countryside: the site is set in Eryri (Snowdonia) National Park and lies 15 minutes' drive from the seaside resort of Tywyn on the Cardigan Bay coast. Spectacularly located under the site’s namesake of Craig yr Aderyn or Bird Rock, and with splendid views of the surrounding Cadair Idris massif and open countryside, Bird Rock Campsite is a quiet and relaxed family-run working farm, spaciously laid out over four grassy acres. As this site is scenically set in national parkland, there’s plenty of handsome countryside to roam around, as well as waymarked walking trails to tramp on. The accommodation field is bordered by a little river that guests can idle beside, wade in and cast a rod into. There's no wifi or mobile phone signal here either… all the better for soaking up the peace and quiet… The site is consistently hailed by previous guests as being kept immaculately clean, and the owners are often lauded for their friendly and accommodating approach. For freshening up before or after your days of sightseeing and outdoorsy action, showers are available to use for a small fee, and a kettle and a washing machine are available over in the washing-up area for making hot drinks and sorting grubby togs. Also on site are Elsan waste points and electric hook-ups. If you need to keep supplies topped up for evening campfires, the nearest supermarket is around six miles away in Tywyn. Plenty of good local pubs serving food are around too; the nearest is 55 minutes' walk away (or under 10 minutes' drive away) in Abergynolwyn.

Please note
  • A charge of £0.50 (€0.59) applies for the use of the shower.
  • There are no bins onsite: all rubbish will need to be taken home with you.
  • The roads to the farm are made up of narrow country lanes, so can be tricky to access for those with bigger vehicles. As a river is on site, children must be supervised at all times. Cold water is free but there is a 20p charge for hot water in the taps.

Electric grass tent pitch (five person)

Liked Stunning location, the site is clean, there is a crystal clear river running alongside the campsite. Perfect for the kids to swim in. The site manager was lovely and couldn’t be more helpful.
We will be back next year.

Disliked There aren’t many toilets or showers, and the facilities could be cleaner.
I had no WiFi all weekend (others in my group did so it might just have been my phone), but that’s not necessarily a bad thing.

Non-electric grass tent pitch (two person)

Liked I've stayed at this campsite for four years in a row now, and it's still my favourite campsite in Wales. The views are astonishing, surrounded by magnificent mountains on every side. Maybe the facilities are a little basic, but if you go away to get away, then this place is heaven, and the owner is lovely and really helpful. When I lost my bank card, she was an absolute life saver. Can't recommend this place highly enough.

Electric grass tent pitch (two person)

Liked Lovely campsite, friendly staff. Loved having the stream running through and being able to swim in the stream/river was perfect.

Disliked The fridges and freezer were full or dirty. They could do with making sure people label their stuff in there so they know if it needs throwing out or not. Toilets/showers/kitchenette need a good clean & refurb which would make this site 10x better.

Non-electric grass tent pitch (five person)

Liked We had a lovely time. The children loved it. Very friendly owner and the shower block/loos very clean. Washing up facilities were great and freezers available to re-freeze ice blocks for your cool box.
Amazing river running through, which is save to swim in. Lovely walks and not too far to drive to the beach. A good time had by all.

Disliked Some noisy drunk men, but they could be ignored.

Electric grass tent pitch (five person)

Liked Absolutely beautiful location. Close to the river, which is good for a swoosh, paddle or swim.
Little stream runs through the site and there were children playing in that happily.
Nice flat pitches and broken into sections so you don't feel like you're just in the middle of a massive field of campers. Fridge, freezer, kettle and washing machine available for use.
Friendly staff, relaxed atmosphere.
Free WiFi although slow

Disliked Facilities are overdue a revamp. Only 2 male and 2 female toilets and a total of 3 showers (plus disabled facility) for the whole site (obvs not an issue for caravans). No grab handles in the disabled shower. Toilets, showers and kitchen area weren't just old they were very grubby. It didn't appear that the fridges were regularly checked for out of date and abandoned food, having found and removed a large carton of seperated milk from in there. Needs a good scrub.
Upon turning into the site by the farm dogs who came running out and barking aggressively. I think they were possibly startled by the motorbikes as no one else seems to have an issue.

Electric grass tent pitch (five person)

Liked The campsite is in an absolutely stunning location. Perfect with kids and dogs as the river flows straight past so the kids spent days playing in there. The camp manager is so lovely & friendly - and he is around to change your coins for the correct coins to use the hot water.

Disliked The toilets/shower/kitchen leave a lot to be desired. It was not clean at all even though I had seen the owner cleaning them in the early morning. There are cobwebs, spiders and flies absolutely everywhere. And the lights are on a timer so you can be on the toilet at night and the lights go off. The tiled walls around the showers were absolutely disgusting.

Local attractions

The site’s spectacular Snowdonia National Park setting among the Cadair Idris massif means that scenic hill walks are on the menu, as well as cycling and mountain biking around Cregennan Lakes or along the Mawddach Trail. For sitting back and admiring Welsh seaside scenes, take the coastal line of the Talyllyn Railway from the seaside resort of Tywyn, six miles from base, to Shrewsbury or in the other direction to Porthmadog. If you’d rather stay put on the sands or try your hand at surfing, Tywyn's beach and waves are much recommended. For varied days off base, the subterranean slate cavern zipwiring park at Blaenau Ffestiniog is well worth the hour’s drive to, or closer to home there’s a laser shooting centre in Tywyn. An alternative (and rather more sedate) option is the Centre for Alternative Technology in Corris, where visitors can learn all about how to live a more sustainable life.
