  • Peaceful Snowdonia site bordered by woodland and a river
  • A 20-minute drive from Capel Curig and half an hour from Conwy
  • Set on a 42-acre sheep farm; campfires allowed and logs sold on site
Hoping for some holidays close to the high Welsh peaks? Tan Aeldroch Farm is a sprawling Welsh sheep farm with green Gwynedd views right across Snowdonia National Park. This 42-acre site has a wild feel to it, although the grounds are always well maintained (courtesy of the flocks of live-in lawnmowers that you'll be sharing with). Bordered by the river Lledr on one side and woodland on the other, the farm has plenty of secluded spots, trees to climb and rocks to clamber over. Handily, though, it's within a couple of hundred yards of the A470, opening up many options for off-site jaunts (including trips to the sea, about half an hour's drive away). The farm's eco-conscious owners have been working to restore the natural balance of this part of the valley since 2003 – help them up by making sure that you leave no trace when settling down here. The facilities at Tan Aeldroch Farm are basic, but you can count on flushing loos and a standpipe. Getting chilly in the evening? Make your own heat by setting up a fire in one of the designated firepits (please bring your own wood). To keep things as peaceful as possible, don't use radios or stereos if hanging by at the pitches, ta. The nearest bar and food shop are in Dolwyddelan, a couple of villages down the main road (five minutes' drive). You can also catch a train here if arriving without a car and book a taxi to the site. The owners are present at the site during weekends, but may not be available midweek.

Liked: Beautiful setting by the river. Very peaceful. Lovely walk from the campsite. Toilets were adequate and clean.

Disliked: The road close by can be heard at times with racing cars and motorbikes. Showers are being built so they’ll be useful.

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked: Beautiful setting next to the river, facilities were good. Very quiet campsite with a few sheep dotted around. Went on motorcycle and despite previous rain was able to find plenty of suitable spots to park and pitch.

Disliked: Need a vehicle to get around local area. No easily accessible paths near. Price was significantly higher on pitch-up than advertised at the site.

From the manager: Hello Sam I’m glad you enjoyed your stay I’m puzzled by two of your comments The price at the campsite it the same as on Pitch Up Basically £10 per adult, £2 per pitch But I don’t charge for bikes… is that the discrepancy? Also re walks . There’s a river walk and a hill moorland walk starting from the campsite Also one up to lake Elsie and over to Betws We’re spoilt for walks Next time you come I’ll show you

Amazing site and have stayed at many will definitely be back.

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked: Last stop for me on a week long tour of Wales. I was in a 6.7m MH had no trouble with access, nice little bridge you drive over to get on site. Lots of people already pitched up,a selection of tents,MHs and campers. Everyone was really friendly and respectful late at night. Absolutely brilliant site, sheep just wondering round all the time. Small river down one side. And if you are traveling with a dog or kids, you can get on a really nice walking trail at the back of the camp. There is fresh water and you can empty rubbish. On the site they have metal fire pits dotted around for you to use and you can buy some wood. Very impressed would definitely stay again

Disliked: Nothing

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked: Really lovely, back to basics site. Pitches next to the river are just fantastic (if you can get one!). No music is a nice feature as you can really hear the river and nature. Close to Betwsy-Coed (drive) and some nice river walks (about 4.5miles to BC) Secure site with locked gate in and out.

Disliked: Was very boggy after heavy rain. No shower facilities (which we knew when booking and they are being installed) but be aware! Doesn't take card so take cash or be able to do a BACS when paying on arrival. Owners don't check if people are following the rules (no music, dogs on leads) and therefore on our last night we did have "neighbours" who didn't seem aware of these rules. Owners rely on people reporting this which could get uncomfortable. We just put up with it as it was our last night.

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked: Great views on site, very idyllic location. Good for a short stay. A few hidden gems for walking near by. The free range sheep were great company too.

Disliked: Friday and the weekend felt a bit over booked due to the free for all space allocation. Obviously would have liked showers but it's clearly advertised that they are in progress so not really an issue.

Local attractions

Coming here to conquer Snowdon? Pen-Y-Pass car park is about half an hour's drive if you're ascending on foot, while the Llanberis station where you can pick up the Snowdon Mountain Railway is also well within range (35 minutes). Make sure to pack sensible clothing if heading out for a hike – any shorts and t-shirts you've brought along can be put to good use on the beach at Llandudno or Colwyn Bay (both 35 minutes). Up for a trip on the longest zipline this side of the equator? Then make for Zip World Fforest (10 minutes' drive), where there's also a kilometre-long rollercoaster that twists downhill through the trees. More adrenaline-fuelled action is to be had at Capel Curig (20 minutes), a peaceful mountain village that's home to the Plas-y-Brenin National Outdoor Centre. Something more sedate? Steer clear of hair-raising Snowdonia activities and instead head for gentler walks at Bodnant Garden (25 minutes) or Conwy Castle (30 minutes).
