Sleep under canvas at the Pretty Meadow Retreats at Cefn Coed in Snowdonia National Park. Tucked into a wooded valley, and with a river, excellent views and stargazing (and owls coo-ing) at night, this North Wales glampsite has a spectacular setting on a private estate with 75 acres of fields, moorland and forest to explore.
Stargazing, nature rambles and seaside strolls (Barmouth is 20 minutes’ drive) are all on the agenda here, and it’s peaceful too, as the nearest neighbours are almost a mile away.
All you need to do is settle into your spacious bell tent. You get to sleep under canvas (keep an eye peeled for dazzling night-time displays of stars though), but all the hard work of setting up is done for you.
Roomy and cosy with rugs, throws and other homely touches provided, the bell tents are practical too. The vents and main door all have separate bug screens, allowing the air to circulate – conducive to a good night’s sleep – while a zipped-in ground sheet means you won’t encounter any unwanted creepy crawlies.
A few practicalities: amenities on site include a facilities block with showers, toilets and a washing-up area. Mountain spring water is available but please boil it before drinking. And as the site owners ask you not to forage for fuel – there are insect hotels scattered about – logs, barbecues and firepits can be purchased from reception.

Local attractions
Cefn Coed may be a spectacular base, but there are miles of walking, cycling and riding paths accessible in equally stunning countryside. Follow the famed Mawddach Trail (10 minutes’ walk) to Dolgellau, Fairbourne and Barmouth, or wander around Abergwynant Woods (20 minutes). If you’re looking for tougher challenges, conquer the slopes of Cadair Idris (20 minutes’ drive), and when you’re more into speed, make for the mountain-bike trails in Coed-y-Brenin Forest Park (25 minutes).
For high-octane days out, make for the zipwires and rollercoasters at Zip World Fforest (55 minutes), or the inland surfing lagoon at Adventure Parc Snowdonia (about an hour). Prefer quieter pursuits? Cast a fishing rod off the banks of Cregennan (15 minutes) and Tal-y-llyn (25 minutes) lakes, or hang on for a balmy day and make a beeline for the vast beach at Barmouth (20 minutes).
To add a bit of culture into the sightseeing mix, spend a day pottering around weird and wonderful follies in the extraordinary Italianate village of Portmeirion (40 minutes), or combine history with family adventure in the subterranean world of King Arthur’s Labyrinth (25 minutes).
