  • Friendly and relaxed riverside campsite
  • On the banks of the River Tryweryn in Snowdonia National Park
  • A short drive to Bala Lake
Right by a river in Snowdonia National Park… that sounds just pretty perfect. Gwynedd's Tyn Cornel Camping is on the banks of the River Tryweryn, right next to the National White Water Centre for those whose Welsh holiday requirements include whitewater rafting, and four miles from more watery antics at Bala Lake. Mountain biking, climbing and hiking are easy to access from here too – and as you might expect in this part of the world, this woodland-bordered site is set in spectacularly scenic surrounds… If you're not feeling overly active, have a hol here to be within reach of the attractions of the national park and into the whole of north Wales: the area is packed with castles, museums, historic houses, steam railways, handsome old villages and – most important – Michelin-starred eating out for foodies. Tyn Cornel has modern and well-kept facilities, including free hot showers, a laundry and a covered washing-up area. Dogs are welcome and there's an exercise area where they can let off steam. Barbecues are encouraged across the whole site: just use them on the blocks provided to raise them off the ground.

What customers say

Lovely, tidy riverside site with grand staff. Facilities spotless, Wi-Fi grand. Great for exploring Bala. Midges and a bit of noise were noted, plus some pitches a bit stony/facilities stretched at busy times.

Fully-serviced hardstanding and grass tent, campervan or trailer tent pitch

Liked The campsite has great showers, toilet and washing facilities. I especially liked the coffee and icecream vending machines. The staff were very helpful on arrival and even gave us a USB lead for our Bluetooth speake as we had forgotten ours.

Disliked As we had a tent box we couldn't drive out and we weren't able to walk to Bala safely as the roads had no pavements so had to get a taxi there and back. We did find out too late that we could have walked there on an old rail track from a path just off the camp site. We also chose the wettest weekend in July but it didn't spoil things.

Electric grass pitch

Liked The layout of the site was nice
WiFi at your pitch which worked well
The washing up area was clean and tidy
The bins had their own area which helped the site
River on site, so beautiful to see, use etc

Disliked The pitches had massive stones/rocks in them, meaning it was so hard not to have a lump in your tent pitch.

If you’re disabled you cannot use a toilet or shower between 11am and 1pm as the cleaner told us direct, no posters or signs about this. (Aware they are on other toilets - but how would you see if you’re using disabled only) the cleaner was rude, other toilets had lots of cobwebbeds, dated, lack of toilet roll after cleaner visit too

The bugs are next level, I understand it’s next to a river but it was intense meaning was back in my rent by 8pm

No mobile phone signal on the site, I feel this should be mentioned to plan

The ice cream vending machine was over priced

The milk for coffee machine isn’t re-fridge rated so left in a warm area

Milkshake machine dosent exist anymore

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: We apologise you weren't 100% satisfied with your stay. The toilet and shower blocks are closed for some time between 11 and 1, not for the whole two hours, we will update the signage to make this more clear.
We offer free wi-fi to cover the fact that there is limited phone signal here and we are always available to help in emergencies.
The ice cream is handmade in Bala, we think it is fairly priced for the quality that it is.
the coffee machine has a fridge attached to it, which the milk is stored in - it is definitely not left in a warm area.
Unfortunately the milkshake vending machine had been sent to be repaired, it should be back up and running by next weekend!

Electric hardstanding touring pitch

Liked Great location, fairly quick drive to Lake Bala. We appreciated the option to arrive later on a Friday. Facilities were clean.

The ice creams from the vending machine were really nice!

Campsite had a great relaxing atmosphere, everyone were respectful and kept the noise down at later hours.

Electric grass pitch

Liked Friendly staff, nice clean site

Disliked When arriving on site, the directions to our pitch could have been better, when getting to our pitch the large party at the side of us were encroaching on our pitch which made it for a very tight snug stay. The policing of how people pitch could be better in my opinion.
The no noise after 11 isn't enforced so found it still quite noisy into the early hours.

Toilets and showers are clean although not enough ladies showers (in my opinion)

Over all was an ok stay but I don't think it's value for money

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Sorry to hear you were disappointed with your stay, if you were unhappy with the people next door over your pitch and had come to tell us, we would've been straight over to sort it.
In regards to noise, we walk the site at 10pm every night to ensure no one is being loud and speak to anyone who is, if there was further issues you could've called us and we would've come back out to deal with any problems.
We pride ourselves in top customer service and always being on the other end of the phone to deal with any issues to ensure everyone on site has a great stay.

Electric grass pitch

Liked Excellent location with river and lakes nearby. Good facilities with shower, toilets and bins provided. Nice and spacious pitches. Small shop and coffee on site. Fire pits provided with deposit.

Disliked Fresh dog poo in pitch on arrival which we had to clean up ourselves as noone was at reception after 6pm. Mens toilet and shower block was disgusting with grass and mud all over the floor and walls making it hard to believe they were cleaned that day. No temperature control on showers. Not enough showers for the amount of guests on site. For this reason i believe its slightly overpirced. Worst mosquitos than any place we have ever stayed! Get ready to be eaten alive!

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: We are glad you had a nice stay and enjoyed the area. Sorry to hear about dog poo on your pitch.. reception is open until 9pm on a Friday so I'm not sure why you didn't come back to speak to us, we would've happily cleaned it up for you. The toilets and showers are cleaned daily and checked regularly, again if you felt they were unclean when you used them and had come to tell us we would've been straight there to sort out the issue.
We pride ourselves on top customer service and always being there to help when needed so always hope if any issues arise that we are told in the moment so we can resolve the issue.

Local attractions

Tyn Cornel Camping is in prime position for exploring Snowdonia National Park, whether you're after an active holiday in north Wales or want to chill in spectacular surroundings with occasional trips out to local attractions. For active types, the National White Water Centre is metres away; the river rapids run past the site and a river access ramp is on site. If you've never tried whitewater rafting before this is the place to do it, as well as to tackle kayaking or canoeing year-round. For more action, Surf Snowdonia, Zip World and Bounce Below are all a short trip away. Walks? Pick from an easy riverside walk straight from the site, the craggy local peak of Arenig Fawr, or ascents like Snowdon or Cadair Idris within easy driving distance. For biking, some of the UK's best-rated mountain biking trails including Coed y Brenin and Penmachno are within a 30-minute drive, while for road cycling the area is filled with quiet, winding country roads, some stiff climbs and consistently fab views. Family cycling trips can be had at the Mawddach Trail, Llandegla or Llyn Brenig. The Tyn Cornel team also highly recommends castles including Harlech Castle and Criccieth Castle on the coast; the local narrow-gauge railways with spectacular views including the famed Snowdon Mountain Railway and the local Bala Lake Railway; the Italianate setting and buildings of Portmeirion village; the local ales, pub food, takeaways or fine restaurant meals in Bala; Michelin-starred fine dining at Tyddyn Llan or Llandrillo…
