Caravan park from the bottom of the site

  • Family-run site on an organic smallholding in the Wye valley
  • A mile and a half from Hay-on-Wye
  • Modern amenities block with disabled facilities and family room
Books + Black Mountains + Welsh walks + Wye fishing = happy sigh. And all are around Black Mountain View Caravan Park in Powys: it's a mere mile and a half from Hay-on-Wye, in the Wye Valley, a short walk from Offa's Dyke Path – you'll probably figure out that mountain views are on offer here too…? Run by James and his family team (described as 'friendly', 'attentive', 'helpful' and even 'delightful' by previous guests), Black Mountain View is a small, relaxed and simple holiday park on an organic smallholding on the Powys/Herefordshire border. Comings and goings are a cinch, thanks to excellent access from the main road (no worries about road noise though – even A roads are pretty quiet in this part of the world). Pony treks, canoe paddles, golf days and bike-based outings are all good outdoorsy options in the surrounds, as are the many walks on offer. If you don't fancy tackling the entire Offa's Dyke Path (177 miles… not for the faint-legged) perhaps the 40-minute riverside section that takes you into Hay-on-Wye is a more palatable idea, still with those cracking mountain views. Fond of fishing? Bring your kit and licence to scout about for barbel, chub and dace in the Wye waters just next to the site. James and family have had many a touring holiday themselves, so know that good clean facilities are at the top of most campers' and caravanners' list for ticking: the amenities here include a recently-built toilet and shower block which also has disabled facilities and a family room.

Electric hardstanding touring pitch

Liked Beautiful site. James takes a real pride in his site and it is beautifully kept. Really quite and relaxed while we were there. A walk into Hay on Wye of about 2 miles cross country.

Disliked We couldn’t stay longer!

A real gem of a site with great access to the Brecon Beacons.

Electric hardstanding touring pitch

Liked Lovely, well kept small site with a very friendly and informative owner! Toilets and showers were kept very clean. Beautiful views of the Black Mountains and clearly signed access to the river Wye and Offa’s Dyke. Lovely walk into Hay-on-Wye.

Disliked Push button showers didn’t last 10seconds between pushes!

Perfectly situated for trips into local towns/villages.

Electric hardstanding touring pitch

Liked Clean and efficient ablution block. Neat and tidy grounds. Pitches on the small side. Very enthusiastic site manager.

Disliked Chased by said manager (2 emails) for an extra £6 (£2 per night) as our motorhome was .3m over accepted length!
Also he charged our visitors for coming over to pick us up in their car! Other than being totally over the top he was friendly!

From the manager: Thank you for the kind comments regarding the toilet block and site grounds.
I'm sorry if you felt 'chased' to pay the correct amount. I sent an email on the 28th May, and a text on the 4th June. Because I had no response I resent an email and text on the 26th June. Most customers when they realise they have made an error with calculating their payment, by not including the small supplement of £2 for a longer vehicle, they pay straight away, especially after receiving communication from myself. As your vehicle was over 7m I was able to allocate you a longer pitch.
We do have a small visitor's charge of £3 per person. This is not charged for picking up or dropping people off. We do charge if people are visiting our customers for a significant length of time and using the site's facilities. Your visitor's did not just pick you up, they stayed for an hour and they seemed happy to pay the fee and I charged them £5 instead of £6.
Later in your stay they visited and stayed for approximately 4 hours and we did not charge although they offered.
I'm sorry if you feel my manner was "over the top" but I am trying to run a small family buisness. We want our customers to enjoy their time with us and we welcome visitors.

Electric optional grass tent or trailer tent pitch (large)

Liked Lovely small site not far from the book Mecca of Hay-on-Wye overlooking the ominous sounding Black Mountains.

Wonderful and clean shower and toilet facilities, good washing up area, and James is the friendliest host you could hope for.

The site is about 2 miles walk to Hay, but a very pretty walk or 5 minutes in the car and has everything you need for a camping trip away. We were only on site for the weekend, but would have stayed longer.

Great stay would recommend.

Electric optional grass tent pitch (two person)

Liked James is really welcoming and helpful, nothing is a problem. This is my 3rd stay. Love that it's a small site with great views. Good size pitches . Facilities are immaculate 24/7. Very hot showers, just need to make sure you have one hand on the button as cut out before you're done. Perfect base for walking the Black Mountains and many more of my AllTrails walks. Can walk into Hay directly from the campsite. Dog area allocated on site , perfect for my dog to chase a ball. The only small downfall is the road noise which doesn't bother me too much during the day and ear plugs do the trick for the night.

Liked We had a great two night stay. Lovely views of the hills. Excellent clean facilities. James, the owner was very welcoming and gave us directions to walk to Hay-on-Wye through the fields which we did on two occasions. We really enjoyed our relaxing break and were sad to leave. We hope to return.

Electric hardstanding touring pitch

Liked James (owner) was super friendly. Lent us mats for the awning as it was on hardstanding. Gave great directions to Hay and mini tour of the site. Shower and toilet block were outstanding. And gates to place shut at night. Beautiful views. Mostly quiet.

Disliked Wasn't allowed to put awning on the grass. I understood the point on killing it, but wouldn't have impacted for the 2 nights we were there. The main road can be a little nosey, but not noticeable when in van.

Local attractions

Head to Hay for books, books and more books, and pub lunches/dinners in sunny beer gardens or indoors by roaring fires. The famed Hay Festival runs for 10 days each late May/early June; also in the area, check out the Brecon Jazz Festival at Brecon (20 minutes' drive) in August and Royal Welsh Show at Builth Wells (25 minutes) in July, the biggest agricultural show in the world. Heading outdoors, the Black Mountains, Wye Valley and Brecon Beacons National Park are beacons for those who like tramping around the outdoors: there are way too many activities and options to list here, but popular options include cycling, pony trekking, golfing, climbing, canoeing, potholing, whitewater rafting, fishing... Over the border, Herefordshire and the Golden Valley, in the lee of the Black Mountains, also have quite the pile going on, and amid similarly splendid scenery too. Visit Arthur's Stone (20 minutes) if you'd like to see what a neolithic burial chamber looks like after 5,000 or so years (pretty well preserved is the answer), or head on to Hereford (half an hour) for museums, the cathedral and tasty foodie/drinkie pickings.
