  • Secluded site bordered by woodland and a stream
  • Wildlife country in the midst of the Ceredigion countryside
  • Three miles from Lampeter and seven from the Dolaucothi Gold Mines
Everyone, even the cynical, should have a little romance in their lives. Especially if it includes a scenic setting with easy access to local pubs (a holiday extra that thaws the icy hearts of the cynical even more than blazing sunsets). Teifi Meadows should warm the battery of your camera as well as the cockles of your heart: this is wildlife country – look out for red kites overhead – in the midst of the greenery of the Ceredigion countryside, and close to the walks, dolphin spotting and beaches of the Ceredigion coast and Cardigan Bay. National Trust sites, River Teifi fishing and canoeing, mountain pony trekking, Roman gold mines and blooming great gardens are in the area too: ask your hosts Jane and Julian for their top sightseeing tips. For supper supplies to sort alfresco eats and stargazing, the village of Llanfair Clydogau is about a mile away and has a well-stocked licensed shop as well as a post office selling rod licences if you’re plotting to fish on the Teifi. Lampeter, about three miles away, has plenty of food shops, independent stores and a farmers’ market, and the pub at Cellan, also three miles away, serves food and Sunday lunches. Sunday pub lunches are romantic too…

Electric optional grass pitch

Liked: We liked that it was in the country, it was nice and peaceful with a little play area for the children. The owner was very welcoming and helpful. With a few little tweaks this would be a fabulous camp site

Disliked: It was very muddy and slippy especially by the toilet block which wasn’t great, a gravel path and track would have helped with this a lot!! Also the toilets/showers could do with a good clean and because the floor is decking boards they were constantly dirty with the mud, getting out of the shower on to a dirty floor wasn’t great, so if your going my top tip would be to take a bath mat!!

From the manager: Thanks for your fair review and constructive criticism. All points are taken on board. I don't think anyone was prepared for the amount of rain we've had this year in Wales, so most - if not all to a degree - campsites are struggling with mud in one way or another. We recently invested heavily in laying hard standing on some pitches and to the main driveway onto the field in order to deal with wet weather, but stopped short of going to the shower block. You're right that it would indeed have solved the problem of muddy decking and dirty feet around the showers. It's something that we'll try to figure out a solution for in case we get future wet summers like this, but this year took us all by surprise. And the other thing is, most of our campers value the natural surroundings which purposefully AREN'T spoiled by the development of too much 'hard' infrastructure like that. It's a fine balance between comfort and 'earthiness' and our campsite tends to favour the latter in general, and on NORMAL years, mud in August simply isn't an issue.

Bothy shepherd's hut

Liked: Such a stunning little set up with our own unique little garden. Me and my son loved it! Bed was very comfy which made us not want to leave! My son loved the tyre swing and river beach to explore and there was lots to visit within a little drive away. Thank you for our much needed relaxing time away!

Disliked: The only criticisms for me would be the Tupperware boxes that breakfast came in need an update as the rubber bit was a little grubby. We also weren’t keen on the cat that was insistent on getting in the Shepards hut so we had to keep the door closed.

Liked: Campsite was lovely with park and a river.

Disliked: The owner of the campsite was very rude and shouting at my child for things they did not do and there was other children at the site

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: This customer was repeatedly warned to be more tidy and to ask their children to stop littering and damaging facilities. On several occasions I, myself, witnessed the children acting irresponsibly, dropping litter and breaking items in the play area - things that then needed to be repaired. Several other campers commented on the 'nightmare family' asking if they could be asked to cause less disturbance. When initially confronted, the mother was hostile and aggressive in denying responsibility. As a campsite owner, this is a simple case of "one of those families" that we have to put up with from time to time. I apologised for my part in venting my frustration (although "shouting" is an exaggeration) and I certainly refute the suggestion of rudeness. As the site manager and property owner, I have every right to enforce rules. This is not a bootcamp campsite with strict rules, and 99% of the time everyone is great at being courteous and considerate (this is the very first time this year that I've had to ask a family to be more tidy out of hundreds of campers here), but with a family like this, something needed to be said. Nevertheless I apologise again for my harsh tone.

Loved it and owner was pleasant and always available if needed

Liked: Campsite was small but was peaceful, plenty of space for the kids to play together. We were sheltered by trees so didn’t feel much wind. Had wood available for you to buy for campfires

Electric optional grass pitch

Liked: Charming little campsite, excellent. clean hot showers, 5 toilets 3 working showers so plenty to accommodate a full site. Feel so far from it all but a wonderful little town Lampeter a 10 min drive for shops etc. Friendly owners, great facilities.

Disliked: hardstanding pitch was very hard to drive caravan onto, had to push it on, easily resolved if they had cut the large grass patch behind pitches to be able to drive it onto pitch. After heavy rain area around toilet block was very slippy, a gravel path around would have helped.

Local attractions

Everyone, even the unimaginative, will find something to do in Ceredigion and the Teifi Meadows surroundings, although the choice of what’s on offer may overwhelm dithery types… Historians of old should start off at the National Trust’s Dolaucothi Gold Mines, less than seven miles away, the only Roman mines discovered so far in Britain and a deeply groovy place for underground tours. Also from the National Trust, 12th-century Dinefwr Castle and its 18th-century landscaped park lies high on a hill above the River Tywi near Llandeilo; and Llanerchaeron house, estate and walled gardens gives a glimpse into how the Welsh gentry lived. The Trust manages a couple of beaches hereabouts, magnificent Mwnt, regarded as one of the best hidden beaches in Europe, and Penbryn, which James Bond fans might recognise from scenes in Die Another Day. Both are on the Ceredigion Coast Path, so don your boots for romantic walks: it’s 11.7 miles to Cardigan from Mwnt, and a much more strollable 1.7 miles from Penbryn to Llangrannog. The colourful Georgian harbour town of Aberaeron is a 6.5-mile walk from New Quay and a day in both is thoroughly recommended: Aberaeron for another spectacular beach, and New Quay for dolphin-spotting boat trips, day-long fishing trips and the only bee farm in Wales. Further along the coast in Aberystwyth, take the Vale of Rheidol Railway up to the smashing falls of Devil's Bridge.
