  • Luxury site with stream and hill views in the Scottish Borders
  • Fishing from site; 40 minutes' drive to 7Stanes mountain biking
  • Shop on site; two pubs with food within a 15-minute drive
Bring your boots and bikes to the Scottish Borders… it's a fine combo at Ettrick Valley Yurts: wilderness all around and warm, cosy interiors for a Borders berth. A little stream runs by the site for paddling and messing about in; it joins up with the River Ettrick, which is fenced off but easily accessible for further exploring. Families and safety are a top priority at this park: all guests' kit is shipped from the car park to yurts by wheelbarrow, keeping the hilly grounds car-free and safe for all sizes of guests. Essentials are well covered too, at the toilets and hot showers a couple of minutes’ walk away, and at the shop selling firewood, kindling and basic supplies. The site team is also happy to help with maps, leaflets and inside tips on the best stuff to do in the area. Whatever you get up to, you’ll have a warm hearth to return to: woodburners keep interiors toasty and there’s a gas hob and grill for making snacks. Raised decks outside with picnic tables, firepits and barbecues mean you can sizzle your bangers as you gaze at the starry skies… and a coolbox is provided too for keeping your drinks nice and fresh. If you'd prefer to eat out, pubs are 10 and 15 minutes’ drive away.

Local attractions

This is top walking country with many paths passing close to the site; the site staff are true experts in where to wander nearby and are happy to share their top tips. To explore further, drive half an hour to the Grey Mare’s Tail Nature Reserve and Trail, through wildlife haven moorlands to a fab waterfall, and stopping off (recommend the tipsters at Ettrick Valley) for a wander round St Mary’s Loch on the way back. Fishing types can try their luck (with permits) on the waters there and seek trout and grayling on the Ettrick. If bikes are more your bag, Glentress and Innerleithen (both 40 minutes away) are part of the 7Stanes network of mountain biking centres, with bike hire and trails for all levels of ability and nerve. If you’re bringing a bike with you, the Ettrick Valley folks will keep it locked up safely in their store. The Scottish Borders are big on history too, what with William Wallace being made guardian of the Scots at Selkirk (30 minutes) and Sir Walter Scott settling down at Abbotsford (40 minutes). The ruined abbeys of Melrose, Dryburgh and Jedburgh are all within a 50-minute drive and it's about an hour to Floors and Hermitage castles.
