Liked Overall great facilities. Helpful and friendly staff. Safe and secure campsite. Ten minutes by car to Shawfair and then 20 minutes into Waverley by train. Or take a bus all the way if you don't have a car.

Liked Location: in the country park; walking distance to local cafes and shops, easy access to Edinburgh city centre.
A big field with plenty of space for tents (mid-week), car free and quiet in the night.
Facilities (washing area, toilets, showers) were clean and well maintained; electric sockets available to charge a phone or other devices; separate bins for recycling and general waste.
Friendly and helpful staff at the reception; good clear instructions sent on email before arrival.
Reasonable price for two people staying.

Liked Well set out and good facilties. Staff were very helpful.
Disliked I booked Dalkeith campsite especially for the Edinburgh Military Tattoo, because it was advertised as easy to get to Edinburgh town centre!
This was totally false as I had to book a taxi there and back at a cost of £66!!
Also, the drive was 40 minutes to the Edinburgh Military Tattoo and not 5 minutes as advertised!

Lovely break away for the Fringe

Liked Clean, peaceful and well kept pitches, clearly marked and fairly private 6meteres apart minimum rule between other tents. Grounds were stunning and at night you wouldn't believe the complete contrast to the business of the daytime traffic on the stunning site. We didnt get a chance to explore the site itself as we were there to get to the Fringe but grounds were beautiful and the sounds of the trees/water was therapeutic at night.
Disliked The distance from the campers car park when unloading and loading although one or two wheel barrows were available to use which made the job easier. The distance to the toilet if you pitched at the bottom for more privacy could take a good few mins to walk. Also didnt like the distance to Edinburgh Central as would have been close to 1hr on public transport although if you drive its fine and onky 25mins. Kitchen area unisex toilet area a little smelly but female toilets were decent, shower plug hole needed unblocking as you end up standing in puddles of water.

Liked Lots of space on the camp site.
Disliked The toilet and shower block was dirty and unhygienic. There was one shower out of order, reducing the available showers to two for the entire site.
If we didn't have tickets for the Edinburgh Tattoo, we would have packed up and returned home. As it was, we had the tent in the car by 7am on the second morning.

Liked Beautiful country estate handy for Edinburgh. Made use of country estate and fort Douglas childrens play area. (Though could have been discounted for camping residents) overall fairly clean. Generally peaceful at night. Loved sound of river in background and country feel.
Disliked Walk from campsite with cars, sometimes showers were not as clean as they could be with a water squeezy mop. Power and freezer facilities could be better. Lack of wifi or phone signal though not always a bad thing. A back to basics campsite.

Nice to have affordable and peaceful accomodation outside of Edinburgh

Liked The stay was great & the site was lovely
Disliked As a pedestrian, having taken the bus from Edinburgh Airport and arriving on foot via High Street, I found it very confusing and tiresome locating the actual campground, even after speaking to a campsite attendant over the phone and rereading the confirmation email several times. Maybe a few more signs near the gate or some indication as to how long the walk will be (~1 km) would be helpful.

Expensive for what it is

Liked Site is in the country park grounds and has festive feel to it.
Disliked We booked for two nights and only stayed one due the weather turning to rain.
You aren't allowed to take your car onto the tent field and it is quite a walk to bring your camping gear from your car, wheel barrows are provided. We left early because we didn't fancy moving out camping gear in the rain. When you have a small tent you rely on your car for storage. Not enough toilet and shower facilities for the amount of campers
