Seriously quiet, just the wildlife and burn
Chill time

  • Simple site on a working croft near Glenelg in the Scottish Highlands
  • Plockton and Isle of Skye within 50 minutes' drive
  • A 10-minute drive from pub, shop, bike hire and the Sandaig Bay trail
Fancy being Monarch of the Glen? No thrones or castles are on offer at Moyle Park Campsite but you’ll stay in regal surrounds, at the head of a Scottish glen surrounded by hills and woodland. It’s a quiet site on a working croft, about 10 minutes’ drive from the coastal village of Glenelg in the Highlands and Islands. In the summer a community-run ferry service operates from Glenelg to the Isle of Skye, and you can also take the causeway to the island from Kyle of Lochalsh, 40 minutes away. For some stunning scenery closer to home, take a drive along the coast road to Arnisdale (half an hour away) and then treat yourself to something from the tea hut. However entranced you are by the scenery, you’ll need the odd bit of sustenance: handily enough there’s a small general store and a pub serving fresh hot food in Glenelg, and supermarkets and various eateries in Kyle of Lochalsh. If you fancy alfresco feasting, bag a haunch of venison (or just some sausages) in town and have a barbecue back at base. You can also hire bikes in Glenelg, and take the one and a half-mile trail to Sandaig Bay, where the Ring of Bright Water writer Gavin Maxwell spent so much time inspired by the wildlife; you might spot an otter or two yourself…

Liked: Location, lovely location so peaceful. Was a tad concerned re comments on access, however not an issue at all. Yes it is mainly single track but loads of passing places and frequent too, therfore no need for reversing. Facilities were clean also. As you enter the gate ther is water supply on a roll up hose so nice and easy to top up water supply. Our pitch was level and others looked level also. A site well off the beaten track so you can feel safe and secure.

Disliked: Nothing really it suited our needs and expectations fully.

Liked: The location of this site is jaw droppingly beautiful. Situated in the lovely Glenelg Glen with the village being about a 10 minute drive away.

I even had a great hair cut from the Bothy Barbers and Hairdressers situated just off site in the old school building. This is the only local amenity so do bring supplies.

The shower and toilet facilities were clean and tidy.

WiFi worked but there was no phone signal on o2’s network.

If you want to get away from it all, this is the place for you. Amazing walks and lots to see and do in the local area. Ferry to Skye only 15 mins away.

The campsite is self service, see the notice board just before the gate to the site for info.

Disliked: Midges but a price worth paying. Bring nets and repellent.

Liked: Such a fabulous place. The road heading in was a joy to travel along. Incredible views. Then once there the site itself is positioned in the middle of a stunning valley, hills 360° around you and super peaceful. Sunset over the hills was beautiful.
Very well set up with 2 toilets and one shower room, as a small site this is plenty. We will definitely return here. Loved it!

Disliked: Nothing to dislike!

Local attractions

If you’re a Gavin Maxwell fan, or just really into otters, you’ll want to make a pilgrimage to the Bright Water Visitor Centre on Skye (45 minutes by car): as well as learning all about Maxwell and the modern efforts to conserve the wildlife of this lush place, you can book guided trips to the author’s home on Eilan Bàn. While you’re on Skye, you might want to take in some more of the island’s attractions such as the Museum of the Isles, tours and tastings at the Talisker distillery and walks through the outstanding landscape to spots like Kilt Rock Waterfall and the Old Man of Storr. Half an hour away, Eilean Donan is the pick of the local castle collection, a fully-restored 13th-century pile on an island where three lochs converge. Duncraig Castle is more of a mansion and is close to Plockton (50 minutes' drive), an eccentric gem of a place with cows wandering the beach and palm trees on the streets. You can catch seal-spotting boat cruises from Plockton, or head to Kyle of Lochalsh, where the Seaprobe Atlantis takes you over the waters in a glass-bottomed boat. Shame they don’t do that on Loch Ness… you can, however, take boats on the famed monster loch from Fort August, an hour and 10 minutes away.
