  • Stay at a family croft in Caol at the foot of Ben Nevis
  • Self-contained cabin accommodation with kitchen and bathroom
  • Friendly owners with extensive local knowledge
You'll likely have a lot of love for Croft Lochyside, near Fort William in the Scottish Highlands. Why so? Well, look at the pics – how could you not? The location here is lovely: on the family croft of Nicky and Donald, in the village of Caol (with local amenities), at the foot of Ben Nevis and on the shores and of Loch Linnhe with constantly changing views. Nicky and Donald are always on-hand to divulge information on the local area, including things to do and places to visit. And the accommodation is lovely and comfortable too, in the croft's cabin, which has been set up for glamping guests who enjoy being in the remote outdoors but who also want some cosy comforts. It has its own spacious, modern bathroom, a TV and heating – and mains electricity. The kitchen is fully-equipped with all electric appliances and cooking utensils. And you'll likely have a lot of love too for the private, enclosed space just outside the cabin, which has seating and a firepit area (with firewood provided) to make toast over the fire or have a barbecue – all with direct views of Ben Nevis and spectacular sunrises. The high fencing also gives the outdoor area extra privacy.

Beinn Bria cabin

Liked: Liked Everything, firstly we were met by Nicky and Donald on arrival and they were very welcoming, they showed us around the cabin and told us Everything we needed to know, they had even gave fresh eggs and biscuits also made some ice in the freezer ( the wife loved this) for us. The cabin is big enough for 2 people, having a little dining area with a stocked kitchen with all the utensils needed, there is a double bed that was comfy, and the bathroom was more spacious then you think and a large shower area that we found great not feeling cramped in a small bathroom so extra points for this. There is a little decking area that is sheltered where you can sit outside aslo a table and chairs in your own garden space with amazing views, there is a small log fire with plenty of free wood to use and this we did, staying up till after midnight just talking with the fire burning in the background it was lovely. Donald and Nicky also gave us advice on were we could go for days out and also local walks so this was very appropriated. The price was just the same as getting a hotel room but you get much more from staying here so I would highly recommend this place.

Local attractions

There's lots to do near, especially if you ask Donald and Nicky for tips: they're keen walkers and canoeists, and are more than happy to share their knowledge of these and other activities in the area like cycling, diving, fishing and skiing. One of the prettiest walks in the area – admittedly quite a high bar – starts straight from the croft to the shore front of Loch Linnhe, and from there all the way to Corpach along the shore. If the tide is out, walk out to the island and back along the river at the estuary. The Caledonian Canal with Neptune's Staircase is also within walking distance, as is the gondola of Nevis Range and a treetop climbing course for when Ben Nevis has been tackled. When you're in this area, a trip on the steam train to Mallaig is a must for its spectacular views: if you've seen the Hogwarts Express steaming north in the Harry Potter films you'll know how it spectacularly looks... Donald's also pretty knowledgeable on local history – Lochabar is steeped in it from the Jacobite uprising to the training of the commandos – and will be around to whet appetites for anyone interested in the same. And speaking of appetites, plenty of places are nearby for food, drinks and occasional live music, like the Lochy Bar, the Moorings Hotel and the Trade Winds Bar within walking distance and the Achintee Inn at the start of the Ben Nevis footpath, for nosh and a pint after your hike up the Ben.
