  • Peaceful family-owned chalets with views over Loch Broom
  • Four miles from Ullapool for boat trips and ferries to Stornoway
  • On the North Coast 500 circular coastal drive
Wow – what a slice of lochside loveliness. And what an utterly fab location has Loch Broom Chalets, not just for its views over Loch Broom (although they are most gorgeous, as you’ll see from the pics), but also for its ease of access to the town of Ullapool and beyond. From this scenic spot it’s a four-mile drive to Ullapool for restaurants, a supermarket and ferries or boat trips from its harbour. Those who’ve set their sights on seeing more of Scotland may like to note that the chalets are handily placed for the North Coast 500, a circular route that takes in many of the Highlands’ best scenery and attractions along its 500-mile length. Select a stay here and you’ll be spending your on-site time in a cosy self-catering chalet, with loch views to gaze out over from the front and a peaceful pine forest providing the backdrop. The chalets were completely refurbished in 2017 and are kitted out with sort of handy features including a fully-equipped kitchen, freeview TV, free wifi and a hair dryer to sort out your mop should you get caught in a Scottish hoolie. Friendly owners Fiona and Ian live on site and make a point of meeting all their guests to offer insider knowledge on days out and the best places to eat and drink.

Local attractions

Set out in search of sea beasts by taking the 10-minute drive up to Ullapool to join a wildlife-spotting cruise out to Tanera Mòr island, keeping peepers peeled for seals, orcas, minke whales and sea eagles. Should you prefer to stick to dry land, you may be lucky in spotting otters around the cliffs of Ardmair beach, just north of Ullapool. There’s also a little museum in town, and a 9-hole golf course (although beware potentially distracting scenic sea views). Those who fancy a bit more fresh air can stroll along the wheelchair-accessible path around the woodlands and waterfalls of Corrieshalloch Gorge National Nature Reserve, hike around Knockan Crag National Nature Reserve or wander around Leckmelm Shrubbery & Arboretum. If you’re keen to see more of the Highlands and islands, it’s a cinch to catch a ferry to Stornoway from Ullapool, or you could make this just one of the stops as you make your way round the length of the North Coast 500, a scenic circular route that’s popular with vintage car groups and intrepid cyclists.
