  • Small parking area at Ben Nevis for motorhomes and campervans
  • Fort William five minutes’ drive and Fort Augustus 50 minutes
  • Five minutes’ walk to Ben Nevis Visitor Centre and the Ben Nevis Path
If you’re looking to tackle Ben Nevis or any other Glen Nevis hills, here’s a fine spot indeed. Ben Nevis Parking is a mere five minutes’ drive from Fort William and couldn’t be a handier stopover place. It’s just five minutes’ walk from the visitor centre, the main route up Ben Nevis and – a bonus here – the West Highland Way. There are a few rules and regulations: only campervans and small motorhomes are allowed to park here overnight, and you must park up on the hardstanding rather than the grass. There are no facilities, so you need to be self-contained with on-board toilet and shower facilities. Daytime hours are reserved for cars and small vans, unless you’re staying for more than one night (you can pay for additional parking upon entry or through the Just Park app, which will charge an extra booking fee). While dogs are welcome, they must be on a lead at all times as there is livestock in the surrounding fields. Finally, all dog mess and litter must be removed from the site and disposed of responsibly.

Local attractions

So there’s easy access to the Ben Nevis Path, the visitor centre (it’s recommended to check on weather conditions here before starting an ascent of the mountain) and the long-distance West Highland Way (all five minutes’ walk) as it wends its way north towards Inverness. And there are loads of other things to do and see: perhaps visit the impressive Neptune’s Staircase lock flight (10 minutes’ drive), designed by Victorian engineer Thomas Telford, or take the so-called ‘Hogwarts Express’, a steam train ride on the scenic Jacobite Line (another Victorian technological marvel) between Fort William (five minutes’ drive) and the west coast at Mallaig. If the kids are with you, go hunting for Nessie on Loch Ness boat trips from Fort Augustus (50 minutes), where you can also walk along the Great Glen Way. When the weather is with you, go kayaking on Loch Linnhe (10 minutes), and when it’s not, try the entertaining displays of stones and gems at Treasures of the Earth (15 minutes).
