  • Well-equipped shepherd’s huts in Cairngorms National Park
  • Nethy Bridge five minutes’ drive; Cairngorm Mountain half an hour
  • Access to Speyside Way from nearby Nethy Bridge; wildlife watching
Wide open spaces, lush forests and spectacular mountains: if you fancy waking up to all these, then Highland Shepherd Huts, in the northern fringes of Cairngorms National Park, might just be the place for you. These modern shepherd’s huts sit in 16 acres of woodland five minutes’ drive (or a 20-minute walk) from the village of Nethy Bridge. From here, you can join the long-distance Speyside Way for a couple of easy hikes to Grantown-on-Spey (six miles) or Boat of Garten (five miles). This latter stretch can also be cycled, and you can hire a set of wheels on site. For something more challenging, head to Cairngorm Mountain (half an hour) – it's a steep old climb but there's always the option of catching the Mountain Railway if you'd like the scenery without the struggle. Other local activities include watersports on Loch Morlich (25 minutes). If the point of your holiday is to slow down and chill out… well, what’s your pleasure? If it’s fishing, you can go angling on the Nethy and Spey rivers (not to mention several local lochs); if it’s golf, there’s an 18-hole course at Boat of Garten (plus a nine-hole in Nethy Bridge). And if it’s wildlife watching, then you’ve really hit the jackpot, for you can simply sit on your hut's deck to spot pine martens, hares and deer. Whichever activity you fill your day with, you'll be coming back to a cosy shepherd's hut that's got its own bathroom and kitchen corner. Bedding and towels are provided to keep life easy, and it's all kept nice and warm thanks to a lovely woodburning stove.

Local attractions

Birdwatchers might want to check out RSPB Scotland Loch Garten Nature Centre (five minutes’ drive), a renowned breeding site for ospreys. Here you may also be able to admire great spotted woodpeckers pecking at the lichen-encrusted trees, plus flocks of geese and several types of tits – some of which will feed from your hand outside the Nature Centre. At the Cairn Distillery in Grantown-on-Spey (10 minutes) you can learn more about the processes that go into the production and maturation of Scotland’s classic spirit… before being welcomed to the tasting room to sample a few wee drams. The prehistoric stone circle within a quiet residential area is just one of the attractions in Aviemore (15 minutes). You can also tee off at the Spey Valley Golf Course or ride the Strathspey Railway, which loosely follows the course of the River Spey.
