It’s sand and sea as far as the eye can see in the sinuous sweep of Luce Bay, and this friendly, family-run site faces right onto the huge, unspoiled beach. It will literally take you sixty seconds to stroll down there and relish the sensation of the golden crumbly stuff sliding silkily through your toes. The view in the other direction is not to be sniffed at either, as the emerald Galloway Hills undulate into the distance. Guests at Sands of Luce Holiday Park can get their chops round an enormous breakfast or some of the homemade sarnies and cakes in the park’s café, or hunker down and work their way through an array of local whiskeys in the Lighthouse Bar, where there are always plenty of amiable regulars offering up fishing advice. The award-winning facilities also include a playground and two games rooms for children, although they’ll probably be too busy making sandcastles, watching the boats launch from the beach, or trying out some wakeboarding and kitesurfing... During Easter, July and August expect plenty to do on site with a free wild food beach forage and RSPB beach safaris once a week, along with a holiday programme of activity days like archery, beach kayaking, blokarts, paddle board, kite buggies and sea fishing available for a small fee. Guests' boats can be launched from the beach and stored in the new secured boat yard at no extra charge.

Local attractions

The wide open spaces, jagged cliffs and river inlets surrounding Luce Bay make for great birdwatching and wildlife spotting, as well as rambling and pedalling (and there are plenty of charismatic watering holes en route). Naturally, it’s fertile fishing, golfing and horse riding territory too. Dotted with pretty fishing villages, this stretch of Galloway coast has an unusually mild micro-climate; there are a number of idyllic public gardens here, such as Logan Botanic Garden, which is filled with colourful blooms, palm trees and exotic southern hemisphere plants. You can also visit the lighthouse at the Mull of Galloway, which is the most southerly point in Scotland, to sound out the mother of all foghorns and enjoy views all the way to Ireland.
