  • Small, 'nearly wild' site just off the Southern Upland Way
  • A 15-minute drive from Newton Stewart and the Galloway Forest Park
  • In a dark sky area; barbecues and campfires permitted
The spirit of wild camping, but in a sheltered spot to make life that little bit comfier… that’s the idea at The Snap Inn Walkers Retreat. Out in the gorgeous Dumfries and Galloway countryside 15 minutes’ drive from Newton Stewart, this small site is just off the Southern Upland Way (no detours required for a night spent here…) and is thus a particularly good spot for those tackling one of Scotland’s great long-distance walks. Being a hardy hiker isn’t a prerequisite for a stay here, though. Should time, creaking joints or any other excuse put the 214-mile epic journey out of the question, you’ll still be welcome to settle into the sheltered pitches here, perhaps using it as a base for shorter jaunts into the nearby Galloway Forest Park or nights spent gazing up at the stars at this designated dark sky park. Pitches here are on the simple side to make the most of the remote setting, but there’s a firepit to warm hands and feet, and guests are welcome to light up barbecues for hot dinners.

Local attractions

Getting out into the Galloway Forest Park (15 minutes’ drive) is a must – there are miles of excellent walking and mountain bike trails here, along with lochs to fish in (once you’ve purchased a permit) and hides in which to settle for wildlife spotting. Try to schedule a nighttime outing here too, as it’s a certified Dark Sky Park, with frequent events held to help guests spot stars, meteor showers and occasional glimpses of the Northern Lights. Other (less active) strolls nearby might take you off to Glenluce Abbey (25 minutes), to the woodland, walled gardens and sea views at Galloway House Gardens (35 minutes) or the ancient Drumtroddan Standing Stones (35 minutes). A meander around Monreith Animal World (40 minutes) is a good plan too, if you like cooing over cute farm animals (who doesn’t?) Time for a drink after all that? Stop by at the Crafty Distillery in Newton Stewart (15 minutes) for a glimpse into the gin-making process, or head to Bladnoch Distillery (25 minutes) to see traditional Scottish whisky come to life. Both are fine places to pick up a bottle for evening campfire tipples.
