  • Quiet site in the Galloway Forest Park, close to Southern Upland Way
  • A 15-minute drive from Newton Stewart; great pub a short walk away
  • Located in the UK's first Dark Sky Park for excellent stargazing
Get set for things to see at all hours when staying at Glentrool Camping and Caravan Site – this quiet Dumfries and Galloway spot is the only campsite within the boundaries of the Galloway Forest Park, 300 square miles of spectacular landscape that’s also home to all manner of wildlife. By day, this is a fab spot from which to launch outdoorsy activities like hikes (in the Galloway Hills or around the forest park’s lochs), downhill descents on the 7Stanes Glentrool mountain bike trails or birdwatching at RSPB Wood of Cree Nature Reserve. If you’re up for a proper challenge, it’s worth noting that this site is close to the Southern Upland Way and therefore makes a handy place to bed down for those tackling the coast-to-coast route. Post-activity chillout time on site might be spent relaxing by the pond, saying hi to the Shetland ponies or letting the pup stretch their paws at the dog walking area. There’s also a free shower block, a motorhome service point and a small shop on site. An excellent pub/restaurant is less than 10 minutes’ walk away, or you can light up a barbie if you fancy doing your own dinner (pick up relevant bits 15 minutes’ drive away in Newton Stewart). Make sure you don’t turn in too early after dinner though: the Galloway Forest Park is the UK's first Dark Sky Park, which means you could well be in for a dazzling display of stars by night. And that’s not all: the Northern Lights have been known to put in an appearance overhead too…

Liked: Did not get a chance to find out.

Disliked: Customer service. Had to cancel due to ill health on the day and called and e mailed to ask to re-arrange. Site has not bothered to reply to either. Very poor particularly as expensive compared to other sites. Will not bother to book again.

Local attractions

Here for the hiking? There are some good challenging trails in the Galloway Hills – if you really want to earn your evening pint, make your way up the Merrick, the region’s tallest peak at 875 metres. It’ll take you 20 minutes or so to drive over there. For something a little less muscle-busting, look out for one of the lochs around the Galloway Forest Park: there are 250 of them so plenty to pick from. Take your binoculars when you go, as you may just catch a glimpse of the otters, pine martens, red squirrels, red deer and golden eagles that live around here. If you prefer to take to two wheels, get your tyres pumped for time on the 7Stanes mountain bike trails at Glentrool (five minutes’ drive away) or Kirrochtree (25 minutes). Time to drop that heart rate a bit after all the antics? Swing by the Crafty Distillery (15 minutes) or the Bladnoch Distillery (25 minutes) to pick up a bottle of something to sip while you stare up at the stars.
