  • Berwickshire caravan park in the grounds of 18th-century Paxton House
  • A 10-minute drive to Berwick-upon-Tweed beaches, ruins and boat trips
  • Woodland walks, adventure playground, Tweed river trips from the site
Want to see how the other half lives? Pack a bag and park yourself in the walled garden at Paxton House Caravan Park. This Berwickshire pile was built in the Palladian style in 1763 for a nobleman who planned to live in it, then inherited a castle and moved there instead. Staying in this small park on the 80 acres of grounds, visitors can take in this popular landmark at their leisure, with river walks and boat trips down the Tweed and/or by delving into the history of the house and its collections of art and furniture. The kids can let off steam on the adventure playground and follow woodland trails to discover wildlife and maybe encounter a fairy or two. For practical things like pubs and grub and shops, as well as sandy beaches, estuary walks, ruins, sea safaris and fishing trips, Berwick-upon-Tweed is a brilliantly convenient 10 minutes' drive away.

Electric hardstanding and grass touring pitch

Liked Yes great little site, my only wish as being a lone camper was that someone had thought of a nice little open fronted hut with benches and seats and a welcome for a chat sign. Take a cuppa and a cake to share with fellow campers. Share stories about camp sites and adventures while travelling etc....

Disliked Price a bit highish as very limited facilities, but the sight was very clean and well kept.

Liked Loved the site and the lovely walks. Also thought the tea room was really good and great value

Disliked Never disliked anything only one thing I would say is the row never had a water tap. Had to take everything down to get to a tap to fill up the water on the motor home

Electric hardstanding and grass touring pitch

Liked Third time at Paxton, very nice and quiet
. Lots of things to do. Great walks if you're capable.

Disliked A bit pricey for me as a single pensioner. No discounts. I'll have to go back to the caravan and camping sites to get the offers available for me. Sadly Paxton may not be an option, even though it is a good place to stay.

Liked Super setting inside walled garden. Young beech hedges mark out pitches. Two toilets & showers kept clean & serviced but are busy when site is full.

Disliked Check in limited to the house shop opening times.

Electric hardstanding and grass touring pitch

Liked Liked the layout of the pitches, the walks around the estate, interesting waterwheel, shop and tearoom.
Staff were very friendly and helpful.

Disliked Toilets in caravan park, only 2 shared toilets/shower rooms (male/female).
Would be much better with separate buildings - shower cubicles and a toilet block/split for male/female.
Needed more frequent cleaning - floors permanently wet.

Local attractions

History is never far away in these parts, and the glimpses you’ll get of Lindisfarne half an hour's drive away will doubtless lure you out during your stay. Wild and peaceful, the ruins of the priory and the castle point to the long and turbulent human past of the place while the colonies of puffins and waders carry on regardless. Check tide times if heading out by car; boat trips to and round make a leisurely way to visit with seal and puffin spotting possibilities en route. There are many more castles to peruse, if that’s your penchant: Bamburgh, still occupied but open to visitors, is half an hour’s drive away. Despite being 700 years old, Alnwick (45 minutes) is also still home to the descendants of its original owners and a must-see for JK Rowling fans as the film location for Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone. The little villages of Beadnell and Seahouses (45 minutes away) form the gateway to the Northumbria Coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, a sea-hugging zone stuffed with chances to go rockpooling and paddleboarding, plus coastal paths and bike trails as well as a haven for wildflowers and (yes, really) wild cattle. Half an hour’s drive gets you to the edge of Northumbria National Park, packed with Roman remains, climbing in the Cheviot Hills and paths around Kielder Water. Further afield, the museums, culture, lively pubs and (of course) the castle of Edinburgh are very doable for a day trip, an hour and 20 minutes away.
