  • Off-grid pop-up on a farm 10 minutes’ drive from Berwick-upon-Tweed
  • St Abbs Head half an hour’s drive and Lindisfarne 20 minutes
  • Shared kitchen; rescue ponies and hens; community and sensory gardens
Set in coastal countryside at Lamberton, Eat Sleep Ride is 10 minutes’ drive from Berwick-upon-Tweed in the Scottish Borders. Run as a mental health charity, it’s an off-grid pop-up site where you can have a peaceful stay on a working farm surrounded by nature, horses and chicks, with a thriving community garden providing fresh produce and eggs daily. Guests can linger in the sensory garden by the wildlife pond and access walking trails heading straight into the surrounding hills or to North Sea beaches. Facilities include hot showers, running water and barbecue equipment, as well as a shared kitchen and eating space. The site owners make biofuel from horse manure, which you can buy for a small charge to use on your barbecue. If you’re keen to experience life on a small farm, this is your chance. You can help collect eggs, weed garden planters and meet the gentle rescue horses. The relaxed vibe of this place is just the job for anyone looking to escape the rat race for a few days of peace and connection with nature.

Local attractions

Active types can go riding (for an extra charge) up onto moorland direct from the site, along coastal headland tracks or on invigorating canters along Dunbar Beach (half an hour’s drive). There are walking and cycling paths leading inland through farmland into the Borders hills, and if the North Sea can coax you in, sea kayaking and wild swimming adventures are close at hand. Pretty Borders towns to explore include Berwick-upon-Tweed (10 minutes), with its castle, landmark bridges across the River Tweed and rambles around the old town walls. St Abbs (15 minutes) is a postcard-perfect traditional fishing village near a nature reserve (half an hour) known for its colonies of fulmars, guillemots, kittiwakes and puffins nesting on sheer cliffs. Just south of the Scottish border are the castles and abbeys of Northumberland. You can take the kids to themed playgrounds and gardens at mighty Alnwick Castle (40 minutes), or head to Lindisfarne across Holy Island Causeway (20 minutes) to explore the priory founded in 635 AD and visit the castle revamped by renowned architect Sir Edwin Lutyens in the early 20th century.
