Pitches

  • Quiet, small-scale aire five minutes’ drive from Dalry, North Ayrshire
  • Scottish Maritime Museum 20 minutes’ drive and Glasgow 40 minutes
  • Fairlie Moor walks from the pitches; takeaways five minutes’ drive
Whether you’re overnighting on your way to island-hopping on the west coast of Scotland (the ferry to Arran leaves from Ardrossan, 15 minutes by car) or tarrying awhile to explore the manyfold attractions of North Ayrshire, Auld Broadlie Aire has got your corner all year round. On site, you have hardstanding pitches with water available to fill up your tank, plus a few picnic tables if you fancy eating alfresco in warm weather. It’s very dog-friendly, and there’s plenty of room in the large garden for giving them a stretch of the paws, as well as lots of woodland walks direct from the aire. This simple microsite is designed for self-contained motorhomes and is found a handy five minutes’ drive from Dalry, if you need to stock up on basics at the supermarket and bakery – there are also several takeaways and pubs too if self-catering is not your thing. The train station is about the same distance away for day trips to Glasgow, or you can make a beeline for Ayr (35 minutes’ drive) and visit the Robert Burns Birthplace Museum.

Local attractions

If you enjoy walking, you can be out on Fairlie Moor in 10 minutes’ stroll from the pitches, or hike up to the stunning Lynn Falls (half an hour on foot) for a looped walk through the glen that’s well-suited to kids too. The Velvet Path Walk starts and finishes at Dalry Public Park (20 minutes) and leads you past relics of the area’s mining and textile-manufacturing heritage. Learn more about North Ayrshire’s industrial past at the intriguing The Museum of Ayrshire Country Life and Costume (10 minutes’ drive), sited in a Victorian watermill and laid out with elaborate costumes in period rooms. If your interest stretches to nautical history too, the Scottish Maritime Museum (20 minutes) has a fine collection of wooden boats at the former Linthouse shipyard. When a day in the big city comes calling, you can be in Glasgow in 40 minutes by car; two of its star attractions are Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum for its peerless works by Salvador Dalí and Charles Rennie Mackintosh, and the Riverside Museum, which has interactive displays on transport history.
