  • Quiet off-grid woodland pop-up site in Eglinton Country Park, Ayrshire
  • Ardrossan Ferry Terminal and Royal Troon Golf Club 15 minutes’ drive
  • Café ten minutes’ walk; shops and restaurants 10 minutes’ drive
When it’s wild camping you’re after – proper wild camping with virtually no facilities – you’ll hit gold dust at Garden Cottage, a pop-up site in Eglinton Country Park, 15 minutes’ drive from Ardrossan in Ayrshire. The grass pitches are tucked into carefully managed woodland, and sheltered by the mature trees for total privacy and seclusion. Loos are 10 minutes’ walk away in the park’s visitor centre, where you can also grab a bite in the café and let the kids have a run about at the play area. Otherwise, this site is completely off grid, so pack torches for getting around after dark, as well as drinking water and a barbecue if you’re going to cook alfresco. There’s a communal campfire surrounded by simple seating made from fallen trees, and essentials shops 10 minutes’ drive away in Kilwinning, where you can divert into cafés and restaurants if you want a change from self-catering. This peaceful spot is run on sustainable lines, and any profit made from the wild camping will be re-invested in the woodland to improve amenities.

What customers say

Brilliant little off-grid spot. Loved the quiet, natural vibe and sound hosts. Campfire's a treat. Handy for Eglinton Park walks. Basic but great value. Finding it's tricky for some, but they're fixing it. Compost loo coming!

Liked The location within the park was lovely, it was still nice and handy for the shop. Fire pit was great. At £10.00 per night it was a bargain would definitely go there again

Disliked I little bit untidy but I suspect it’s a working progress as it has great potential to be cracking little site.

From the manager: Hi Christine thanks for your review.
Yes the site is very much work in progress four years in and still hard at it
We are in France currently for a month hence the site needing a bit of tlc I hate to think about the weeding and grass cutting when I get back.
We did consider shutting the site for a month but felt that it would be inconvenient for some of our regular customers who like to get away for a night or two of chillaxing.
The site is not run for profit so thanks for the top score for value for money we simply want the land used and people to enjoy the space.
We hope you enjoyed your stay and if you come back mid august you will see the site a bit more manicured.
Regards stuart and Susan

Liked Lovely setting and really enjoyed watching the sun set round the communal camp fire. The fairy lights after dark added a magical touch! The owners were also really friendly, welcoming and helpful.

Non-electric hardstanding and grass campervan pitch

Liked Lovely little site in a copse. No services, good phone signal. We were the only ones there - arrived in the rain and were met by the owner. He had lots of advice about where to go and what to do around the area. If you want to get away from it all and just hear the birds this is the place to go. Some issues finding the site, it is up a track next to the pony field - there is some red lettering on a fence post - that we didn’t see but rang the owner and he gave us directions.
