Derrybawn Mountain Ecolabs: Glendalough lakes

General

  • Eco-friendly site on the edge of the Wicklow Mountains National Park
  • Five minutes' drive from Glendalough and 40 from Dublin outskirts
  • A 15-minute drive from the highest pub in Ireland

A getaway on the edge of a scenic mountain range, close to hikes, bikes, stately piles and city streets… all that and it’s eco friendly? If that’s ticking all the right boxes, then hurry along to Derrybawn Mountain Ecolabs, a five-minute drive from the village of Laragh, high in the Wicklow mountains.

The site’s on the edge of the Wicklow Mountains National Park, so expect plenty of hikes and bikes up scenic hills and through pretty vales – Derrybawn's on the old hiking trail from the coast to the monastic settlement at Glendalough. Or take the car out for a spin along the winding road that leads to the mountains’ peaks for spectacular views. And if neither mode of transport appeals? Hire a bike on site to get out on two wheels.

For a bit of history, an easy jaunt into Glendalough is a must: it’s a five-minute drive from base, but a day or two should definitely be devoted to walks around the lakes and foothills and a stroll through the medieval monastic settlement that the area is famous for. Once a thirst has been worked up, head to one of the pubs in the small village or back in Laragh for a pint.

After days of explores, settle in for quiet evenings back on site: spend some time in the games room before dinner, then get stuck into sizzling up your evening eats in the cooking area.

Please note

No hen/stag parties permitted via Pitchup.com.

No cars/motorbikes by the pitch/unit. All cars must be parked in the designated area.

Please note that the toilet/shower facilities are unisex.

A charge of €10.00 applies for the use of the shower.

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

If making a fire, the fuel, logs and coal have to be purchased on site.

A cable measuring at least 20 metres is needed for the electric hook-ups.

Guests are advised to bring a good quality torch with them as parts of the site are unlit.

The land itself has so much potential would love to see it transformed to what could be an amazing destination stay

From the manager...

Derrybawn Mountain is a forest floor, nature-based pitch, and has no plans to open a commercial campsite.
There is a lovely commercial campsite (400 pitches) in Rathdrum, with excellent facilities.

For mountain access, forest experience, and trekking from doorstep, visit us any time.

We arrived to a warm welcome and a helping hand. Travelling with a baby and two children aged 5&6, we had a wonderful time as a family, the kids had no end of activity in Nature, back to simplicity. Fresh eggs daily. Exactly what it said on the tin. The time Andrew took teaching the kids about the bee's, chickens, fire and nettles and doc leaves lol we could never have asked for more. Fabulous place in a beautiful setting with the most wonderful host. Will be back.

We like the feeling of being in nature, the style of camping side are very true to nature experience. We had camping fire, and because the site does not have outdoor lights, it made the star gazing a beautiful event. My children loved the hens and walking through the woods.

    Disliked:

There were lots of mosquitos, but that is nature.

Katelyn and her friends were newbies to forest floor, remote mountainside pitchups in the forest- but were organised, had done their homework, and made the most of the trails.

A pleasantly informal place to pitch your tent07/29/2021

Derrybawn offers a relaxing, spacious and pleasant place to pitch for a few nights with good hiking access to Wicklow way and Glendalough. It is not a commercial camp site but rather a way to share an ideal location with accommodating, witty and occasionally surreal banter.
I stayed with my daughter who wanted a “proper” camping experience so the possibility to set a camp fire in the fire pit completed the picture (er... as did the rain on the second night).
Our pitch was spacious, flat and comfortable with a path direct out to the Wicklow way (on which we ate eggs collected that morning from Derrybawn hens and one or two wild bilberry harvested en route). There’s a selection of cottage industry and an honesty box by the gate for which I can confirm both the sour gooseberry jam and survival bars are delicious.

    Disliked:

If you use google maps, do _not_ search by name! Use the postcode that Andrew gives you as otherwise, you’ll be directed up a rugged service road. It’s actually very, very easy to find using the eircode / postcode.

    The surrounding countryside

    Disliked:

Lack of facilities, no shower, no washing facilities at all, no kitchen facilities. One grubby toilet used by everyone. Not ‘forest floor’ camping, it was basically in someone’s garden surrounded by a forest. It is advertised as having cooking facilities and a freshwater well, we were told to bring our own cooking gear and never saw the well. Also it is a 1 hour 18 min walk to Glendalough, not as near as expected.

From the manager...

Derrybawn Mountain, Wicklow Mountains National Park, remote, simple, rustic experience regrets Doreen and her partner disliked their forest floor pitch.

Local attractions

If you’ve not had enough hiking locally, don’t worry – there’s plenty more not far away. Avondale House and Forest Park (15 minutes’ drive), the waterfalls at Devil’s Glen (20 minutes) and Powerscourt Waterfall (half an hour) are all popular picks, and the Bray-Greystones cliff walk is about 40 minutes away. Seaside day without the hike? Brittas Bay beach (35 minutes) has several kilometres of sand and dunes to scramble about in.

For a change of activity, aim for Clara Lara Funpark (five minutes) for waterslides, obstacle courses, canoeing and ziplining, or take fishing kit up to Blessington Lakes (35 minutes). Or, to dial the pace down a little, perhaps plan wanders among the plants at Kilmacurragh Botanic Gardens (20 minutes) or Mount Usher Gardens (25 minutes), or take a walk around Vartry Reservoir (15 minutes) to earn yourself a pint at the highest pub in Ireland.

Time for some bright lights, big city action? Stop off for pics at Ireland’s answer to the Hollywood sign in, yes, Hollywood (half an hour), then grab a spot at the Carrickmines park and ride (35 minutes) for easy outings to the centre of Dublin by public transport.
