  • Glamping pods with hot tub access on the shores of Lough Shark
  • On the Newry Canal Way towpath for walking and cycling
  • Firepit, barbecue, picnic table, fridge, kettle and heater provided
Glamping in the gorgeous surrounds of Northern Ireland’s Co Down is quite swish enough for some. But the Pods at Lisnabrague Lodge are on the estate of a listed period property dating back to the 1700s – and have access to an outdoor hot tub for added luxury… These comfy cabins sit on the brow of a hill with lakeside views over lovely Lough Shark and have access to a shared bathroom housing an electric shower. Sleeping up to four people, they each have a fridge, kettle and heater indoors, as well as a firepit, barbecue and picnic table with a parasol outside for easy outdoor eats. (A supermarket is a 10-minute drive away over in Banbridge.) Once fed, if you're up for whiling away an afternoon with a game or two, swingball and badminton are available at the park and coarse fishing and kayaking are permitted at the lake (just bring your own craft). Want to stroll for your supper? The pubs of Poyntzpass – which also has its own history trail – are a 25-minute walk away along pleasant paths, and guests can easily set off on a saunter or cycle ride as Lough Shark’s outer edges are connected to the Newry Canal Way. This trail also goes to the village of Scarva (around a 40-minute walk) for restaurant outings, and bike hire’s available at the visitors’ centre if you'd like to travel round Co Down on two wheels.

The Fox's Den camping pod

Liked: I enjoyed the peace and tranquillity of the camping pod, with a nice view of the lake. I especially enjoyed the hot tub, which made all the difference. I forgot to bring towels (didn't realise hot tub was inclusive). Fiona very kindly brought us some (my son & I). I am thinking of bringing the wife as she liked the sound of the hot tub.

Disliked: Not many walking areas on site, however with a short drive, there are plenty of places.

Local attractions

Touring Northern Ireland with the kids in tow? You’ll likely stumble across parks within a couple of miles of Poyntzpass and Loughbrickland, and can top off playtime with an educational expedition to the Celtic Navan Fort ancient ceremonial monument a 30-minute drive away. If it’s too rainy for outdoor activities, drive 10 minutes to ten-pin bowling at a local pub or tour the Tayto Castle factory (around the same distance by car) to see how the famed potato snacks are made. Shoppers can browse for bargains at The Boulevard discount outlet, also a 10-minute drive from the Pods at Lisnabrague Lodge. Craving culture? Time your trip just right to visit the drawing room at the National Trust’s Derrymore House in Bessbrook (open on certain dates throughout the year) and wander the grand grounds of this thatched house if the rainclouds hold off. For top trekking, the Mourne Mountains are 35 minutes away from Lisnabrague Lodge, while city visits to Belfast are a 40-minute drive to the north east.
