  • Luxurious coastal hideaways half an hour’s drive from Ballymena
  • Belfast 40 minutes’ drive and the Giant’s Causeway about an hour
  • Stylish, well-equipped wooden lodges with private-use hot tubs
When you’re in search of a luxurious base along the stunning County Antrim coastline, Briarfield Farm Stays may very well fit the bill. At half an hour’s drive from Ballymena, accommodation is in spacious wooden lodges, decked out to a high standard on a farm in the Antrim Coast and Glens National Landscape – if forested hills and Irish Sea views are part of your remit, they’ve got you covered there as well. Each lodge offers well-equipped upscale kitchens and pristine stylish bathrooms. The open-plan living space has inviting sofas, a dining table and plenty of room for getting together to watch TV. Bedrooms come with all linens supplied, and your private outdoor space includes dining table and chairs on the covered decking, a hot tub under a pergola and direct access to farm walks. Use your lodge as a base for exploring the Causeway Coastal Route, or hang out on site for some serious downtime. Your day could go like this: morning coffee on the decking, a hike into the wooded hills and a soak in your private-use woodfired hot tub. Perhaps then a gentle stroll down to the sea – you can see rocky Ailsa Craig in Scotland on clear days – and wind up with dinner underneath a million stars on clear nights. Guests can collect fresh eggs every day from the farm’s free-range hens, and your closest neighbours are the cows grazing in nearby fields.

Local attractions

If you’re intent on becoming at one with nature, Glenarm Forest (one of the Glens of Atrium, five minutes’ drive) has woodland and lakeside walks. Straidkilly Nature Reserve (10 minutes) is at its best when the bluebells flower in spring, and Glenariff Forest Park (35 minutes) is known for challenging hikes through rocky gorges to tumbling waterfalls. Well-known County Antrim landmarks are close by too; you can tiptoe across the basalt columns at the Giant’s Causeway, or cross the precarious Carrick-a-Rede rope bridge (both just over an hour). Re-enact scenes from ‘Game of Thrones’ under the avenues of trees at The Dark Hedges (55 minutes), or learn about the history of the MacDonnell clan at clifftop Dunluce Castle (about an hour). If you fancy a day in the big city, Belfast is only 40 minutes away by car. There you can explore the shipyards and book the immersive Titanic Experience at fascinating Titanic Belfast Museum, or discover the horrors of Crumlin Road Gaol. End your time in the city singing along to Irish music while enjoying a pint of the black stuff in a Belfast pub.
