Walnut Tree Farm: Lots of space

General

  • Peaceful Somerset farm site half an hour from Bristol and Bath
  • Plenty of space, with no restrictions on pitch size
  • Campfires and barbecues allowed

Feel rural and regal in the village of Regil at quiet, well-maintained and very green Walnut Tree Farm, a small Somerset farm site roughly half an hour's drive from the fab cities of Bristol and Bath.

There's a right royal amount of space here, and you can lay claim to as much of it as you wish, as there are no restrictions on pitch size here. Select your spot (by the stream, perhaps, or looking out over the neighbouring fields) and make yourselves at home with whatever outdoor furniture, paddling pools and barbecue kit you need for a comfy stay. Feel free to create a campfire corner too – there's firewood available to buy by the barrowload to help you build up a good blaze.

Close to the pitches is a collection of excellent eco-friendly facilities, including clean compost toilets and hot showers.

Quiet time (10pm-8am) by night is requested across the site to ensure all guests can benefit from a good dose of rural peace to aid their dozing.

Host was very pleasant and made sure our stay was perfect. Offered us free eggs from the chickens as well as a huge barrow of wood for only £5. Lots of space to lay claim to and plenty of bbq and fire pits. Toilets and showers were spotless. Very quiet site. Lots of walks. Host also suggested a great day at the Thatchers Brewery open day which we didnt know about - went anyway and it was superb! 100% will return to Walnut Tree Farm.

    Disliked:

No hot water to wash up (easily sorted by boiling the kettle).
The nearest pub has now permanently closed meaning you can’t walk to a pub anymore.

Absolutely fantastic, exceeded expectations. We were met by the friendly owner at the site even though we arrived quite late (around 8pm). He showed us to our shepherds' hut and made us feel very welcome. During our stay the owner was very attentive and made our time extra special. The location of the site was perfect for those wishing to explore the Mendip Hills, but also in close proximity to Bristol, Bath and Wells. My wife and I were celebrating our wedding anniversary during this holiday, and we will remember 'Walnut Tree Farm' (and the owner) very fondly. We intend to return in the future and recommend it thoroughly. Thanks Mike.

The site was clean and spacious. Facilities were good quality and eco-friendly. Michael was very friendly and helpful. He even put on entertainment for the kids with a chicken race, leading his chickens down a pre-marked race track on his BMX bike. His fire pits and logs gave us a lovely evening under the stars, cooking dinner over the open fire. The local countryside was lovely and Michael suggested footpaths and walks to make the most of it.

Wonderfully peaceful. Mike was the most incredible host, he spent 2 hours fixing my awning. Facilities are the cleanest I’ve ever seen at a camp site. I slept like a baby all three nights. Beautiful rolling countryside, lots of walks and cycle paths/ lakes etc.

Local attractions

Looking over the Mendip Hills, it would seem that these limestone beauties would be an apt place to start your explorations from Walnut Tree Farm… it’s easy to see why this is an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

As well as prehistoric Cheddar Gorge, half an hour’s drive from the site, there’s a Victorian fort at Brean Down (about an hour’s drive west), and an Iron Age hill fort (about 40 minutes south) at Brent Knoll, to hook every kind of history buff.

While you’re doing the historical rounds, go Gothic at the National Trust’s Tyntesfield, a turreted and stone-carved mansion 10 miles north of Walnut Tree Farm. You'll be able to smell a good tale here – the house was once owned by one of the country’s wealthiest commoners, who managed to get himself rather stinking rich thanks to fertiliser. (It’ll all make scents if you pay a visit and nose out more.)

Step onto the Monarch’s Way footpath to follow the escape route from the Battle of Worcester said to have been taken by the future Charles II back in 1651; running from Worcester to Bristol and down to Brighton, the path is clearly marked so ensures a royally safe experience (perhaps unlike that of Charles II).

From the Monarch’s Way south of Bristol, you’ll wind up in Wells (15 miles from Walnut Tree Farm), where a cracking cathedral awaits, along with the 800-year-old Bishop’s Palace and its medieval features including a drawbridge and well-kept gardens for exploring.

Must see

  • Cheddar Caves & Gorge (10.8 kilometres)
  • Brunel's ss Great Britain (11.2 kilometres)
  • At-Bristol (11.5 kilometres)

National Trust

  • Tyntesfield (10.3 kilometres)
  • King John's Hunting Lodge (13.1 kilometres)
