  • Two-acre site on a family-run smallholding in Bishops Lydeard
  • Five minutes' walk from West Somerset Railway steam trains
  • Rural site backed by woodland; two pubs within a few minutes' walk
If you like to arrive in style on your holidays, this is certainly a place where you can do just that… Bishops Lydeard Caravan and Camping Site is one of those rare places where you can ride into town on a steam railway, thanks to the West Somerset Railway station a mere five minutes’ walk away. Those planning to ride the rails at a later point, meanwhile, should be pleased to hear that access in a more conventional manner is also straightforward, as the A358 passes fairly nearby. Either way, this is a rather splendid spot with pitches spread across a two-acre field surrounded by protected woodland just on the edge of the village. It’s all been set up in the grounds of the 18th-century Greenway House, a Grade II-listed building that was once part of the adjoining Sandhill Park estate. It’s now a family-run smallholding, so you’ll share the space with ducks, geese and chickens and there are more farm animals to spot in the surrounding fields. As well as being a top spot for train enthusiasts and those in search of farm stays, this place also has much to offer walkers, cyclists and folk travelling with four-legged companions, thanks to the plethora of pathways in the surrounds. And it’s also rather handy that there are two fine pubs and a microbrewery within a few minutes’ walk… Life on site is pretty simple, with a few amenities set up in the form of portable toilets, water taps, a chemical disposal point and a shower room. Barbecues are permitted and there’s ice pack freezing available to keep provisions cool.

Liked: Very friendly and quiet location.

Disliked: Toilet facilities not great, outdated portaloos. No lights inside the toilets.

From the manager: Thanks for your feedback. Please note that all facilities are clearly listed on our page. Sensor Lights are installed in all our facilities. We did though hire in a couple of extra toilets for a couple of weeks and it’s noted that these wouldn’t have had these installed. The other 5 toilets all had working lights.

Electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: We stayed with a group of other families with young children. Plenty of space for the kids to run around and play. Good pitch sizes. Good location for walking to the brewery, steam train and a local park. Facilities were always clean. A washing station (cold water) was added while we were there which made washing up easier. The children loved the badminton and games which were set up and accessible for all. While we were aware there was only one shower/hot water sink at the time of booking, this did pose some issues with us being able to access these facilities due to being a large group. Shower was always clean.

Disliked: A toilet block and an additional shower/warm water sink would be a welcome addition.

Electric grass touring pitch

Liked: Ideal for the Quantock Brewery, steam railway and Lethbridge Arms for Thai food which are all within walking distance. We love this site and keep returning. Always very friendly and helpful and a well kept site. We have everything we need in our caravan and we are not looking for a club house or toilet block so suits us very well and really appreciate the owners letting us stay at their site, thank you

Electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: Location - ideal for exploring West Somerset, Minehead and the Quantocks. Small site, fairly flat pitches. Friendly owners, helpful and let us pitch next to our family.

Disliked: Portaloos. Although the website states there are portaloos, this proved insufficient over a busy Bank Holiday weekend. We started with 7 working toilets and this soon fell to 5. By the end of the weekend, it was clear the system wasn't coping with the volume of waste, with units out of order and the handwashing water ran out. They were cleaned several times a day but with no hot water and running out of handwashing water, it became a personal hygiene concern. No dishwashing facilities, we managed by boiling water but this was tricky in the rain. No recycling facilities. It is lovely to see free range birds but this resulted in a high volume of droppings in the actual camping field which could be trampled into the tent etc.

From the manager: Hi thank you for your feedback it’s is all noted. It was our busiest weekend of the year. All toilets were serviced on the Thursday and were cleaned 3 times a day during the weekend. It is standard for us to close off toilets of if we think they are nearing capacity. Unfortunately we hadn’t noticed that one of the extra toilets we had hired in hadn’t been properly topped up with water and the reservoir ran out. All the other 6 portaloos were working ok and also in the shower room there was a hot water bathroom sink. We do appreciate that a lack of washing up facilities is a problem and are actively going to resolve this for next season. Free range birds are not allowed on the camp site so I apologise if any got on if the gate was left open by the other campers. If I recall correctly you were right by the gate.

Electric grass touring pitch

Liked: Huge flat site, very spaced electric pitches, welcoming greeting from Karen who runs the site and is a fancy chicken, geese and turkey breeder. Near the Quantocks and the GW Steam railway. Large toy box on site full of kids toys and nets left out for badminton and volleyball.

Disliked: There was no shower / toilet / washing block, but c 6 stand alone toilets “Andyloos” and 1 large but windy shower. No separate facilities for hand hygiene or washing up dishes.

From the manager: Hi John So glad you liked your stay here, hope to see you back. Thanks for your feedback. Yes we recognise that there is no dish washing point currently on site but are actively working on the problem. Not sure if you saw but in the shower room there is a pedestal sink with hot water facilities with a mirror above. The toilets also all have cold water sinks as well. All the best Karen

Local attractions

Start local with a stroll up to the village to browse the farm shop, the Quantock Brewery, the tea rooms and the little rural life museum within Bishops Lydeard Mill. Just outside the village (but certainly worth travelling a mile for) is a smart hotel where you can pick up day passes for the swimming pool, spa and nine-hole golf course. If you need an excuse to book in for some pampering, perhaps a few long walks or bike rides would fit the bill? There are plenty of options in the nearby Quantock Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, around the Blackdown Hills AONB (20 minutes’ drive) or over in the Exmoor National Park (15 minutes). And one mustn’t forget the coast – the South West Coast Path starts in Minehead (half an hour), and it’s got plenty of beachy activities too. A little inland from Minehead is the splendid Dunster Castle; other fab options for days out nearby might include horse riding (10 minutes from the site) or gentle strolls around Hestercombe House & Gardens (15 minutes).
