  • Farm site over 270 acres, two miles from the Quantock Hills
  • Help feed the farm pigs, sheep and chickens
  • Footpaths and woodland to walk; maps provided; breakfast available
Foodies: this is the site for you. Huntstile Organic Farm, in the foothills of Somerset’s Quantock Hills, knows its food inside and out and backwards too. Owners Lizzie and John are fervent about good food grown simply, locally and well, and their 270-acre site grows, produces and rears top-quality produce of all flavours. Huntstile is also in an area of low light pollution: alfresco suppers and then lying beside the tent and looking up at the stars sounds like a holiday you might like to hunt anywhere… Guests can help feed the farm pigs, sheep and chickens (just ask the staff) and if you ask very nicely, the farm cats and dogs might take you walkies around the footpaths, fields, woodland and farm structures like the 16th-century seed granary (Huntstile has been a farm since at least the 11th century and surrounds a 14th-century farmhouse). If you prefer to self-guide, pick up a map from the dining room and take a tour around the farm or take one of the walks up to the Quantock Hills starting directly from the farm gate; John and Lizzie can provide maps for other nearby walks to their homemade stone circle and through ancient woodland. Toilets and showers with free hot water a short walk away, and there's also access to a guest fridge with freezer space. Kids can also have a bouncingly good time in summer on the big garden trampoline. Dedicated electric vehicle charging points are available. Breakfast is available between 08.30 and 10.00 daily, while pizza nights and a licensed bar are on offer on Wednesdays and Fridays in the evening. Here on Sunday? Lunch is available too. There is also a marquee with table football and table tennis.

Electric grass and earth tent, campervan or trailer tent pitch

Liked: Stunning scenery, and so peaceful! The atmosphere in the pub when we arrived was great and Becca was so helpful and friendly. Didn't get a chance to have a drink/food this time as we only stayed a night but will definitely be back to try it all out! (Bonus point for the best port-a-potty I've ever used!)

From the manager: Thank you so much for your kind words Bee! We serve Pizza in our Cafe on Wednesday and Friday nights in the Summer, and we plan to have an American BBQ most Sunday afternoons. We look forward to seeing you here again soon. PS: We do have WiFi access in the sitting room in the house and in the Garden Room but not as far down as the Shepherds Hut sadly (one day!) 😄

Electric grass and earth tent, campervan or trailer tent pitch

Liked: Gorgeous campsite and lovely friendly staff. There's even a medium sized pond with a row boat for guests to take it in the water. Sheep, chicken and pigs fed at 9.30am everyday and children were allowed to collect the eggs. Loved having water taps so close to our EHU pitch. There was also a covered bandstand that saved us in the rain when we BBQed and ate dinner. Microwave and freezer available for refreshing ice packs.

Disliked: Only 2 hot showers in site, the other 4 were cold water which is not stated on the website that I could see. We stayed during a quiet period so were fine, but suspect the queues would be a nightmare when the majority of pitches are occupied. The only thing preventing me from giving full 5 stars. Otherwise stunning campsite.

From the manager: Hi - thank you for reviewing our little campsite. I do wish you had raised this when you were here as we DO have 7 hot showers. There are 4 in the trailer on the campsite, 2 in the shower block next to the café and 1 inside the café. This is a good ration for the 25 pitches that we have. Its the 3 toilets down on the campsite that only have cold water in the hand-wash basins (with soap and santiser gel). All the others have running hot and cold water. All of the showers have a great supply of hot water. We love our campers! - and want to keep them happy...so if ever there is an issue with anything at Huntstile we will always do our very best to rectify it as quickly as possible. PLEASE please: always bring any problems to our attention during your stay so that we can make things as comfortable for you as possible. Kind regards, Lizzie Huntstile Organic Farm

Non-electric grass tent, campervan or trailer tent pitch

Liked: We loved our stay at Hunstile - it was a last minute booking to try out our awning which we had picked up from my friend earlier in the day. Oh, the fun we had! Hunstile was definitely the ‘chilled’ site we needed to test our skills and it delivered on every count. Firstly, we were greeted by the very lovely Lizzie - Lizzie took her time in explaining where to pitch and how the site was laid out. A clear map of everything was right up my street as an (ex) orienteerer! Love a map! As someone who lived on a smallholding in a previous life, I felt right at home. The facilities were plentiful and spotlessly clean and as someone who struggles with the cold, I can’t tell you how grateful I was to see a heated towel rail in the shower in the morning ❤️ The piece de resistance was the onsite cafe - oh my goodness, what a wonderful treat that was! A full English buffet, or a delicious coffee and homemade pastry (they looked amazing). We went for the Full English to steel ourselves for the day ahead (not great weather for next night in Devon). The produce was all home grown and I have to note the bacon (BEST I’ve had for a long time!). Croissants already filled with jam (making them so much easier for children - great idea). The staff we met were all incredibly polite and helpful. (I should mention here that when we had a mooch around later on, on the night we arrived, there was a chap in the cafe making pizzas, presumably at the end of a hard day, possibly for staff - they looked fabulous through the window!). Wen also saw John taking some children around the farm to see the animals - a wonderful addition for families. My Grandsons would love it - we’ll hopefully be back one day! Great views across the Mendips from top of site.

Electric grass and earth tent, campervan or trailer tent pitch

Liked: Huntstile farm has a lovely family feel, the host couldn’t be more friendlier or more helpful. The camp site was perfectly clean and tidy. Loved that they were doing their part to recycle with pacific boxes for everything. The area was so picturesque and quiet. We also had some food from there kitchens, the food was fresh and was delicious. A perfect touch to our experience was our 4 year old being able to feed and see the animals her favourite part was being able to collect all the eggs from the hen houses. Thank you for a great stay.

Electric grass and earth tent, campervan or trailer tent pitch

Liked: The most gorgeous camping site. Views that go for miles and only the sound of farm and wildlife to contend with. We had a perfect stay, staying mon to fri. With the option to feed the animals, breakfast and pizza night it’s a gem of a camp site!

Disliked: The toilets would benefit from lights in and out, nothing major but on a dark night a torch is needed.

From the manager: Thank you for your lovely review our campsite - I have noted your comments regarding the loo lighting and will try and organise something. There is no electric there but we should be able to rig up something solar. Hope to see you again this year! kind regards, Lizzie Huntstile Organic Farm

Liked: This is our 4th visit and we love how quiet and peaceful the campsite is. It’s very well laid out with separate sections for different needs. Showers and toilets are always clean and well stocked. Hosts are super friendly and helpful. Never eaten here but the restaurant was really busy with none campers which was lovely to see.

Local attractions

Huntstile is five miles from Bridgwater, eight from Taunton and about 20 minutes’ drive from the coastline of highly recommended Kilve beach, with the Quantock Hills and Somerset villages along the way. Ask Lizzie and John for tips or go in whatever direction takes your fancy: northish to the coast, south to Taunton, east and north east to Glastonbury and Cheddar, and west to the Brendon Hills and then Exmoor Forest. Weston-super-Mare, Minehead, Bristol and Cardiff are all within 25 miles. Around 20 minutes’ drive takes you to Ramscombe, a picnic spot fave of the Huntstile staff, as it has loads of space for running and kicking a ball around, brooks to dam, purpose-built barbecues for lunch (and dinner), and a two-mile Red Walk suitable for most abilities. Also head for Hestercombe House, overlooking the nearby Blackdown Hills and featured on the BBC’s Gardens Through Time. The formal gardens here were designed by Gertrude Jekyll and Sir Edward Lutyens and have 40 acres of woodland walks, an orangery and a temple.
