  • Green and spacious Dorset site within the Moreton Estate
  • Jurassic Coast, Monkey World and Tank Museum within 15 minutes' drive
  • Café and play area within the grounds; abundance of walks nearby
The scenic country village of Moreton – a peaceful Dorset spot with walled garden, ford and river views – was just made for dawdling, and Walled Garden Campsite, a green and spacious Dorset site, is right around the corner. The upshot? This splendid spot is a prime pick for those seeking relaxing rural hols. And there's history here too: stay here and you'll be within the historic grounds of one of Dorset's finest estates, famed for its links with the war hero and scholar TE Lawrence (more commonly known as Lawrence Of Arabia). The Walled Garden Campsite is spread over a flat and open field, adjacent to Moreton's walled garden, café, riding centre and woodland (with guests having unlimited access to the grounds and play area). Guest numbers are deliberately limited here to keep the surrounding village as calm as usual (and ensure there's plenty of space between pitches, with extra-large pitches available for large families). In the centre of the field, a large tree makes a fine spot for snoozing in the shade or picnicking. Simple facilities like a toilet and shower block, several drinking water taps and sinks are available to guests, and barbecues and firepits are welcome as long as they're safely off the ground. While you're fine to admire the horses in the adjacent field, resist the temptation to pet them or feed them snacks; you'll need to keep dogs on leads at all times too, to save any trouble with the resident animals. Please bring your own toilet paper, refrain from playing any music and give the staff a bell if you need any help. There are no bins on site, so you'll need to plan to take your rubbish away with you. The site's just over two miles from the nearest railway station, where you can catch trains to Dorchester, Weymouth, Bournemouth and beyond.

Local attractions

If you're up for stretching your legs and seeking out history as you do so, you can tackle the seven-mile Lawrence of Arabia Trail, which meanders through quiet country lanes down to the Tank Museum (10 minutes' drive) where you can stop at a café for a breather. Most folk will appreciate the fact that The Walled Garden Campsite is so close to the Jurassic Coast – Weymouth beach, Sea Life Centre and pier (half an hour's drive) make a fab and mightily family-friendly day out, while those seeking generally quieter spots can try Kimmeridge (half an hour) or the Isle of Portland (40 minutes) instead. The popular spots of Durdle Door and Lulworth Cove are about six miles away – drive down there in 15 minutes (or call a local taxi) or go the intrepid route and hike over in a couple of hours or so. For kid-pleasing outings, try the likes of Monkey World (10 minutes), Dorset Adventure Park (20 minutes), Farmer Palmer's Farm Park (20 minutes) or a trip to the wildlife haven Brownsea Island from Poole Quay (40 minutes).

Non-electric grass campervan pitch

Liked: Quiet location with basic facilities.

Disliked: No toilet paper provided in toilets. Texted ahead as requested to say when we would be arriving but got not reply and site was unmanned. Not a problem except showers run on tokens and there was no way of acquiring them. Phoned the owner/manager several times and left a voicemail but got no answer or call back. This was late afternoon/ early evening. Several people onsite told us they were also trying to get in touch about the same issue. Got an email reply late in the evening basically saying the owner didn't receive our voicemails and would have sorted something out if he'd have known... luckily a maintenance man came along next morning and knew were the tokens are kept.

From the manager: Hi Lucy, thank you for your feedback and we are sorry you were disappointed that you didn’t have anyone to meet you on your arrival and some difficulty in obtaining shower tokens and having to use your own toilet paper. I refer to the text message you mentioned you responded to prior to your arrival. We send all our campers arrival instructions which would prompt you to text us 30 mins before arrival. In those instructions we clearly state that the site may be unmanned at times. We also mention that shower tokens are required and we also recommend that these are booked in advance, although not essential. We also remind you that you will need your own toilet paper. All of these points are also mentioned on the booking platform and our website prior to your booking. We are a pop up camp site with restrictions imposed by the Government and then reinforced by the accounts manager of PitchUp. We share your frustrations at the situation (particularly not receiving the phone messages that you and others left, which was explained to you) and that staff which you refer to the maintenance man were on site in the mornings and evenings at some point. We take your feedback seriously and we will ensure that in future we are able to retrieve voice messages and try to make the arrival instructions easier to understand to avoid any confusion for future campers. I am sorry you haven’t taken up our offer to soften the experience as this was our attempt for a good will gesture.

Liked: Beautiful campsite, very clean, staff were very friendly approachable and helpful. Loved the site, lots of spaces for children to play. The walled garden was beautiful too, nice little added extra there. We are booking again with the grandparent! Can’t wait. Picture perfect

Disliked: Would have liked a fresh water tap to be more central but other than that it was a fantastic few days away.

Non-electric grass campervan pitch

Liked: The location was very peaceful and away from any main roads. We wanted basic and peaceful. Good clean toilet and shower facilities. Adjacent business offers a cafe. Great open space. Raised wood burners and bbqs are allowed.

Disliked: Just a field with no privacy between pitches.
