Two minutes' walk from a ford

General

  • Green and spacious site on the edge of the Dorset village of Moreton
  • A 20-minute drive from Dorchester; half an hour from Weymouth
  • A few minutes' walk from a walled garden, café and the river Frome

This scenic country village – with its walled garden, ford and river views – was just made for dawdling, and Moreton Ford Camping, a green and spacious Dorset site, is right around the corner. The upshot? This supremely simple spot is a prime pick for those seeking relaxing rural hols.

Moreton Ford Camping is spread over a flat and open field, adjacent to Moreton's walled garden, café, riding centre and woodland. Guest numbers are deliberately limited here to keep the surrounding village as calm as usual (and ensure there's no shortage of space). In the centre of the field, a large tree makes a fine spot for snoozing in the shade or picnicking.

Simple facilities like a single toilet, drinking water tap and sink are about 100 metres away from the main field in a separate block. Barbecues and firepits are welcome as long as they're safely off the ground. While you're fine to admire the horses in the adjacent field, resist the temptation to pet them or feed them snacks. Please bring your own toilet paper, refrain from playing any music and give the staff a bell if you need any help (and take your rubbish away with you too please).

The site's just over two miles from the nearest railway station, where you can catch trains to Dorchester, Weymouth, Bournemouth and beyond.

Please note

At least one of the party members must be aged 21 or over.

This site has no on-site shower facilities.

Guests are advised to bring a good quality torch with them as parts of the site are unlit.

The site caters for families (immediate members) and couples only - bookings from all other forms of groups are not accepted.

The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act (i.e. Pit Bull Terrier, Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentino, and Fila Brasileiro).

Peaceful, level field with views to the surrounding countryside. Our second night we had the entire field to ourselves.
In the lovely village of Moreton with the walled gardens of the Manor next door to see (with cafe open daily).
Also very close to beautiful walks and St Nicholas' church with the amazing carved glass windows by Lawrence Whistler.

Big open field - we were lucky that there were just a couple of other campers there when we were there. But I believe the owner has allowed for very generous spacing so I imagine that it will never be crowded.

On my first night the Lady and a friend who runs the site came over to introduce herself and offer any assistance and firewood.
The next night, two more people came over to ask if I needed anything and once again offer firewood.

Beautiful, quiet meadow with a limit to the number of pitches (we hope this continues in the future) so everyone was very spaced out. Lovely sunset and easy access to the Dorset coast (eg Studland beach, Corfe Castle, Lulworth). Friendly and helpful owner.

Facilities as described and though only 1 toilet, it was clean and wasn't a portaloo.

Local attractions

It's not just country vistas that put Moreton on the map – the village has close ties to TE Lawrence (alias Lawrence of Arabia), who lived in a house just outside. If you're up for stretching your legs, you can tackle the seven-mile Lawrence of Arabia Trail, which meanders through quiet country lanes down to the Tank Museum (10 minutes' drive) where you can stop at a café for a breather.

Most folk will appreciate the fact that Moreton Ford Camping is so close to the Jurassic Coast – Weymouth beach and pier (half an hour's drive) make a fab and mightily family-friendly day out, while those seeking generally quieter spots can try Kimmeridge (half an hour) or the Isle of Portland (40 minutes) instead.

History buffs may wish to take a trip to the nearby village of Tolpuddle (10 minutes), where in the early 19th century six farm workers were transported to Australia for trying to form a union. The Tolpuddle Martyrs Museum has interesting displays and interactive exhibits about how these events had an impact on labour relations that endures to this day.
