  • Well-equipped shepherd's hut in a private garden with a stream
  • A 20-minute drive from Dorchester; half an hour from Weymouth beach
  • Logburning stove, ensuite bathroom and outdoor bath
It may have few big towns and no cities or motorways at all, but Dorset definitely doesn't have a dearth of dazzling scenery. Fan of hidden hamlets and rolling farmland? Then you may find it particularly pretty at Lower Wraxall Farmhouse, a tiny site 20 minutes' drive north of Dorchester. Things have moved since the days when Thomas Hardy described Gabriel Oak's basic shepherd's hut in 'Far from the Madding Crowd'; guests looking for a bit of pampering should find the accommodation's kitchen, logburning stove, running water and wifi welcome. One thing hasn't changed, though – these huts are still cosy hideaways, small enough to be snug but big enough to contain almost everything you could need (there's a reason Hardy called them 'little Noah's arks’). Guests can also use the on-site tennis court or the board games in the hut. The hut is on a working farm, set in a secluded location a short walk away from the pastures and main buildings. The private garden it's been parked up in is bordered by a stream and is almost always abuzz with wildlife that you can admire from the comfort of your porch or on the outdoor furniture provided. Or maybe you'd like to look up at the stars while wallowing in your rather fab outdoor bath (with hot and cold water so you can get it just to your liking)? Lower Wraxall Farmhouse is about 20 minutes' drive from Dorchester, home to the nearest supermarkets. There's also a pub and handy village shop in Cattistock, slightly more than a mile away. Closer to home, owner Judy is happy to welcome you to the farmhouse across the road for breakfast (for an additional cost, and as long as you let her know in advance), including homemade marmalade and locally sourced ingredients.

The Beech Hut shepherd's hut

Liked: Beautiful location. One of the nicest shepards huts I’ve ever stayed in. Microwave and cooking facilities available, but well tucked away and out of sight due to making the most of the space I would imagine. Great night sleep & the bed was really comfy. Gutted we didn’t get to use the outside bathtub as we spent a little longer at a pub a couple of villages along instead & lost track of time. Would love to come back and stay for longer next time. Super lovely and super peaceful with wonderful hosts. Really found a little gem here!

Disliked: That we didn’t have the time to stay longer!

The Beech Hut shepherd's hut

Liked: Location, immediate surroundings, the garden, the babbling brook, the bird feeders, the fire pit, loved the very comfortable, snuggly bed, the eggs, cake and tea/coffee on arrival, the attention to detail including a dog blanket and towel, and Judy, our wonderful host. This is a beautiful place to stay which we would highly recommend.

The Beech Hut shepherd's hut

Liked: Very qwaint little hut, cosy and warm, away from all the hustle and bustle but only half an hour away from the coast and other places so perfect for us. Had fresh milk and hot drinks available so it was a blessing when we finally arrived in the dark and wet. Bed was super comfy although positioned so you need to climb over the other person if you're on the inside, but other than that, great. Lovely shower but bathrooms very small, not a problem for us though, soap, towels etc all supplied. The location is opposite the farmhouse in the old forge, don't do what we did and follow the sat nav!! We had a rather traumatic experience down a farming lane in the dark and rain. Dog towel and blanket also provided which was so helpful, lots of space outside for the dog, gutted I didn't get a chance to use the outside bath or fire pit. Will definitely come back! Oh and had a lovely bottle of bubbly for our anniversary waiting too, such a lovely touch 😊

Disliked: Apart from the position of the bed, everything else was absolutely great!! Could have done with a couple of games or books and/or a small TV above the bed for bad weather days/evenings but we went and bought some cards so kept busy on the evening anyway.

The Beech Hut shepherd's hut

Liked: Lovely clean and well appointed Shepherd's hut and garden. The fairy lights outside made it feel cozy even in bad weather. The outdoor bath was a great addition! The homemade bread and eggs from the farm were a thoughtful touch.. good location too :)

Disliked: Nothing really.. the bed was a little on the hard side for us but everyone's different.. and maybe some games and a pack of cards in the hut would have been a nice addition, as we did have one day of very bad weather all day.. luckily I brought my laptop so we were able to watch some films in bed :) Would love it if the price was a little lower than £90 per night as it was quite expensive for us.

Local attractions

Are you houseproud and/or a keen gardener? Prepare to meet your match at Mapperton House and Gardens (10 minutes' drive), a splendid sandstone manor with some of Dorset's top topiary. If you hold historic houses in particularly high esteem, also drive out to Sherborne Castle and Gardens (30 minutes), a fine country pile built by Sir Walter Raleigh where you can admire Capability Brown landscapes for hours on end… Recommended beaches in the area, meanwhile, include West Bay (30 minutes), Lulworth (40 minutes) and Charmouth (45 minutes). Burton Bradstock and Codgen beaches (both half an hour away) are both particular favourites of the folk on site, as is the coast path around there. Fancy dozing on a deckchair or frittering away small change at old-school arcades? Trips to Weymouth (30 minutes) should also be in the offing. Cerne Abbas (15 minutes) is also worth visiting for the Cerne Abbas Giant, an enormous (and very much naked) male figure carved in chalk into the hillside. No one quite knows quite how old it is or how it got there, but you can have any archeological debates over a scone or two at the village's tea rooms. For more walks, try Eggarden Hill (15 minutes) or the Iron Age fort Pilsdon Pen (25 minutes).
