Cows coming in for milking

  • Relaxed eco site at a Dorset organic farm with stunning views
  • Close to the well-known pubs of Corscombe and Evershot
  • Free cow-with-calf milk delivery each morning
Looking for a quiet and eco-friendly site in a gorgeous setting? Make your way to Liberty Farm, a family-run business in the Dorset National Landscape (AONB) a little over a mile from the tiny village of Halstock. At this site, numbers are kept purposefully low to create a relaxed atmosphere where you can soak up the stunning views of this protected area and spot wildlife like deer and hares running about at dawn. Things have been kept simple here, with facilities including mains water stations and compost loos. There’s no access to electricity, except for a small solar phone recharging station. With such scenic surroundings, this is a great base for walks and bike rides with plenty to visit nearby, and the Jurassic Coast a half-hour drive away. Yeovil (15 minutes’ drive) is a handy place to pick up all the supplies you need, and there are several more attractive villages and towns to poke around in nearby, including Evershot, Corscombe, Beaminster and Montacute (all within a 20-minute drive). There’s also a small kiosk on site selling emergency supplies and the farm’s own produce, and a free cow-with-calf milk delivery every morning for a fabulous taste of your farm location.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked Quiet and rural. Friendly welcome. Fresh milk straight from the farm. Friendly cows. Good views. Effective eco loo. We camped in a dry summer period. The field is fairly flat and tentpegs went in easily. Picnic bench under stretch-tent. Economy camping.

Disliked Some of the local footpaths are not waymarked or maintained and can be a bit unclear and overgrown but it is rural, remote Dorset so that is not really suprising.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked Superb location, facilities as described, which are simple and reflected in the price. Just what I wanted and more......which was that Abby let me stay in a bell tent as it was still up and the ground was sodden........saved me a lot of mess I have had to setup and pack up my own tent. Lovely milk as you'd expect. Many thanks!

Great stay, would book again. Very pretty surroundings.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked Beautiful countryside, back to nature, off-grid stay. The yurt is gorgeous, very well equipped in kitchen area, massive comfy bed. A flushing loo! And shower. Very friendly welcome.

Disliked You may have to get used to a few insects, but you are on a farm :)

Liberty yurt

Liked The view from the yurt was beautiful, and the bed extremely comfortable with lovely linen. As the picture shows the yurt has cows in the field around it , but they are behind a fence so they are separate from the immediate area around the yurt and to and from the loo, which is flushing ( no walking through cowpats as I had wondered). Abigail is a lovely host and the whole weekend was very relaxed and welcoming . I would highly recommend going and hope to be back , maybe in the cooler months as the yurt also has a log burner.

Disliked none

Local attractions

There are lots of lovely places to take a walk nearby, and you’ll be given a pack of circular walks and OS maps to use while you’re here. Some of the top picks include the Hardy Way, the South West Coast Path and circular routes running from East Coker, Evershot and Hooke Park. There are also some fine options for bike outings, with Sustrans route 26 running close by and the bike-focused Feed Station café in Merriott (half an hour’s drive) organising group rides. Other places to visit nearby include the famed Cerne Abbas Giant (20 minutes), etched into a hillside for at least several centuries. For a break from all the rural walking or biking, how about a wander around one of the local towns or villages? Beaminster (15 minutes) and Bridport (25 minutes) have plenty to offer visitors, and cute villages like Evershot and Corscombe (both within 15 minutes' drive or half an hour's cycle ride) are great for a relaxed drink in a traditional pub. And of course, there’s the Dorset coast – the area known as the Jurassic Coast is about half an hour away, for walks on the beach in West Bay, excellent lunches in the Hive Beach Café and a stroll around the subtropical gardens and swannery in Abbotsbury.
