General

  • Peaceful, basic pitches in a tree-lined paddock with rural views
  • 15 minutes' drive from the beach and attractions of Weymouth
  • Country pubs and farm shop within a five-minute drive

A secluded spot, with scenic surrounds and a short hop from the gorgeous Dorset coast – what a fab little rural retreat is Friar Waddon House, in the Dorset Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty 15 minutes’ drive from the seaside resort of Weymouth. Gorgeous green views all around give the place a decidedly peaceful vibe, but you’re only five minutes’ drive away from pubs and a farm shop, and 10 minutes from a train station and supermarket.

This is a laidback kind of place that welcomes dogs and has plenty of space for running about and playing games, setting up barbecues for dinners or trying your hand at campfire construction. A shared toilet block is a short stroll away; sensible types might wish to bring a torch for this jaunt as it can get pretty dark by night. It's also worth noting there are no showers on site.

As you'll note from the map pointer, this is a most handy spot for Dorset adventuring: it's a 15-minute drive from both Weymouth and Dorchester, and just a little further from the fossil-packed Jurassic Coast, so there should be plenty to keep you entertained whether you favour countryside or coast (or, ideally, a bit of both…)

Overly priced for the facilities provided. I appreciate it's been a difficult year but this site charged double what I paid last year for a site with full facilities.

A field with two composting toilets, a standpipe and kitchen sink just doesn't offer enough for what they are charging. £10 per night per pitch would have been more appropriate than the £40 a night charged. This is taking advantage of a situation where other sites are booked out due to everyone staycating.

Called owner on arrival was greeted by a lovely young lady who took us to our pitch in the overflow field we had lots of space and showed us where toilets etc where. Was able to purchase logs for fire which she brought straight around.
Toilets, washing up area was very clean! Lovely sign which gave us info on where to buy local eggs, milk, cheese etc from and inspiration for local places to visit.
My children loved watching the horses and chickens approach fence next to our tent!

The field is lovely and open, plenty of walks nearby and enough privacy even on a busy bank holiday.

The toilets are basic but they work, very clean and convenient.

Elie was very helpful and understanding with our questions and very laid back which was perfect.

We had a big group and everyone really enjoyed the stay.

Fresh eggs available from the farm, firepits and logs too!

Friendly, clean, tidy small site in Dorset countryside - near the sea08/30/2020

We had a lovely time. The campsite was very clean and tidy. Large pitches in a field surrounded by hills, with free range chickens (be warned, fence is electric!). We were met by Ellie who gave us a warm welcome, pub recommendation and loaned us a fire pit for £5/ night. The campsite is relatively small and the pitches are large, plenty of space to spread out and only a few other tents.
Feel I should give another view to the bad review left here. Whilst facilities are undeniably basic, the compost toilets are immaculately clean, and only smelt of sawdust and fresh wood from the cute (finished) hut they are in - complete with fairy lights and vase of fake flowers for decoration. There is a large sink for washing up / hand washing. The owner was friendly and helpful and not in any way rude. £40 per pitch per night is perhaps a little higher than expected - but given everywhere else in the country was booked up this weekend we didn’t mind, and had a great time.

Local attractions

Country days and coast days are equally easy from here – and equally fab. Walking and cycle trails are pretty much right outside the site, and there are plenty more routes around the Dorset Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. If you like to see big stuff, take a wander to see the Cerne Abbas Giant, 25 minutes’ drive away (a lengthy lad indeed at 55 metres from top to toe) or make for Maiden Castle, 20 minutes away (one of Europe’s largest Iron Age hillforts, the size of 50 football pitches).

For something more genteel, head east for 25 minutes or so to get to Sculpture By The Lakes and 15th-century Athelhampton House or follow the Thomas Hardy trail around Dorchester (15 minutes) and out to Higher Bockhampton.

A trip down to the coast is a cinch too – take your pick from the sandy beach, aquarium and traditional seaside fun in Weymouth (15 minutes), the sweeping 18-mile Chesil Beach (20 minutes) and the fossil-hunter’s fave Osmington (20 minutes). The sea-view subtropical gardens, swannery and kids’ farm at Abbotsbury (10 minutes) are certainly worth a stop too.

Must see

  • Abbotsbury Swannery (4.1 miles)

  • Radipole Lake Nature Reserve (4.4 miles)
