  • Family-friendly farm site on the Isle of Purbeck
  • On the edge of Langton Matravers; five minutes' drive from Swanage
  • Adventure farm with a petting zoo, indoor soft play centre and café
A family-friendly site with pitches on a grassy field, Putlake Adventure Farm sits on the outskirts of the peaceful Dorset village of Langton Matravers, on the Isle of Purbeck (actually a peninsula rather than an island…). You’ll never be far from the sea on this scenic stretch of land: Swanage beach is a five-minute drive away, while several highlights of the Jurassic Coast, including the spectacular vistas and crashing waves of Dancing Ledge, are a 40-minute walk away through the fields. A popular adventure farm with a petting zoo, vast indoor soft-play area and a playground with diggers and pedal go-karts (plus a café where the adults can nurse a hot drink while the kids scamper about) is located on the same site; please note that a separate fee applies to enter the farm. Oodles of footpaths pass right outside the site, including car-free trails that lead to the historic village of Corfe Castle (one hour and 15 minutes on foot, though you can also drive there in about 10 minutes). And just in case this all-round top location wasn’t already fab enough, Putlake Adventure Farm is a quarter of a mile from a pub with a cosy beer garden… When you roll up here you’ll be free to pick the spot you best like the look of. If you unpack and realise you’ve forgotten something, the handy on-site shop ought to tide you over with essentials for the duration of your stay. Facilities include toilets and a washing-up point. Please note that while VW-style campervans are welcome, the site is not suitable for larger motorhomes.

Non-electric grass and earth tent, campervan or trailer tent pitch

Liked: Great location. Not too crowded. Basic facilities but showers, toilets, etc all kept clean and pleasant. We had originally tried to book the nearby Tom's Field site but it was full. With hindsight this was a much better choice as it was much quieter and less crowded. And you can still walk to Tom's field for pizza in the evening and a breakfast bap in the morning.

Disliked: Quite a lot of the field has some slope to it. But not too much of a problem.

Liked: Quiet, Clean toilets, .50p for a 4 minutes shower. Cafe on site serves lovely breakfasts. With a 15 walk through fields to the coastal path, with Durlston castle & Swanage in one direction & Dancing Ledge the other, this campsite is ideal for keen walkers.

Disliked: Bring your chocks!

Local attractions

With a long sandy beach and shallow waters, Swanage is a popular destination for a family day at the seaside. And when you’re all beached out, you can head to Prince Albert Gardens for views of the Victorian pier and Swanage Bay, or take a ride on the Swanage Railway's heritage trains all the way to Corfe Castle and beyond. Overlooked by the ruins of 11th-century Corfe Castle, Dorset Adventure Park (10 minutes’ drive) is the place to get wet (at the inflatable water park) and/or muddy (at the assault course with cargo nets, monkey bars and mud slides). If you’re into militaria, you'll likely appreciate the displays at The Tank Museum (25 minutes), which include armoured vehicles from both World Wars, plus other conflicts like the wars in the Gulf and Afghanistan. You can see these tanks moving in the open-air arena during special events such as mock battles.
