  • Friendly, spacious back-to-basics site in rural west Dorset
  • A 10-minute drive from Bridport and 20 from Lyme Regis
  • Eco-friendly site with an orchard, tyre swing and garden toys
Not a fan of being packed in with hundreds of other guests? Pilsdon View Camping owners Terry and April are in full agreement with this point of view – they’ve got seven acres to play with here, but they like to keep numbers low to make sure there’s plenty of space for ball games, barbecues, campfires and stargazing (all essential aspects of a trip to the countryside, they suggest…) That approach and the mighty friendly welcome on offer have earned a huge stack of rave reviews for this rural Dorset site 10 minutes’ drive from Bridport. And there are plaudits for the location too, in a scenic spot with the river Char running alongside and easy access to several footpaths and bike tracks for rural explores. The owners are doing their level best to preserve that special environment, giving over part of the site to an orchard and growing lots of their own herbs and veggies in the garden (and asking dog owners to keep their furry pals on a lead so they don’t rampage through any of the above and clean up any doings). Kids can roam fairly freely around this site, playing with the garden toys and tyre swing or setting up their own games; don’t worry about them getting mucky, as there are gas-powered showers to take care of clean-up time. Toilets, a fresh water supply and a washing-up area are also in place close to the pitches field. Mobile phone and device charging is available for a small fee. Please note that as this is a family site, guests are expected to fall quiet after dark (no amplified music or other noise nuisance will be allowed).

What customers say

Pilsdon View is a grand spot for families, with hosts April and Terry getting rave reviews. Facilities are spotless and warm showers are a winner. Plenty of space, a peaceful vibe, and a tasty food van on site. Kids love the play areas and outdoor games. Just a bit tight for big vans on the way, but most want to come back.

Non-electric grass tent or motorhome pitch

Liked Everything, from the friendly welcome from April to the spacious site and ability to pitch where and how we wanted. Excellent clean facilities and hot water showers dotted around. Firepits provided for free with a bag of logs and kindling only costing £5. Food truck available for breakfast and early evening at very reasonable prices. Overall excellent value

Disliked Leaving, so we had to book a return trip for the following weekend!

Non-electric grass tent or motorhome pitch

Liked How friendly and helpful the hosts April and Terry are. Reasonably priced pitch and free fire pit hire when you buy firewood. Firewood, kindling and fire pit delivered by tractor. Showers perfect temperature for us.

Disliked Hubby would like a shelf in the shower to save him bending down

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Many thanks for your visit, and for taking the time to write a review. We will look into providing a shelf or more storage solutions in the showers.

Non-electric grass tent or motorhome pitch

Liked The welcome, the food van, the flat pitches, the dog walking field, the park & tyre swing, plenty of space to play ball games, the showers, the loos, the friendly vibe created by the owners.

Disliked Nothing to dislike. The only teeny weeny thing that would have made it even better was to provide dog park type clips near the loos and wash up to park your dog!

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thank you very much for your visit and very kind comments. We will look at providing a safe and secure way to park your dog near the facilities. Thank you for the positive feedback.

Bell tent

Liked How spacious the site was. Pre erected Bell tent option. Vegan breakfast options on site.

Disliked Lack of shade.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Many thanks for coming to stay in the bell tent and for taking the time to write a review. We pitch the bell tents in the open so they don’t get damaged by anything dropping out of the trees. It can mean they are in full sun during a heatwave. Our guests are very welcome to bring a shade tent or gazebo, or unzip and roll up the walls to allow air flow.

Local attractions

Might you have seen the cliffs of West Bay before? It’s quite possible if you ever watched Broadchurch, as they played something of a starring role in the telly series. They’re even better viewed in real life though, so it’s worth making the 15-minute drive to see them for yourself. Lyme Regis (20 minutes’ drive) is another fine choice for a day by the sea – mackerel fishing trips head out from the harbour, and there may well be fossils lurking on the beach (and if there aren’t any presenting themselves, you can see what other folk have found at the town’s Dinosaurland Museum). In fact, pretty much the whole stretch of coast here is worth a visit, so strolls on the South West Coast Path are highly recommended. The scenery extends under the surface too, with the 2,000-year-old Beer Quarry Caves (35 minutes) certainly meriting a detour. Away from the coast, Axe Valley Wildlife Park and Mapperton House and Gardens are both within 20 minutes’ drive, as are a couple of vineyards and cider producers for guests of a particular vintage.
