Devon or Cornwall? Cornwall or Devon? It is, of course, one of life’s dilemmas… but thankfully one that’s easily sorted with a stay at Chapmanswell Caravan Park, a Devon holiday park that’s close to the border with Cornwall and in a most handy spot for getting out to enjoy the spoils of both counties. This park five minutes drive from the village of St Giles on the Heath ticks all sorts of boxes for all sorts of holidays: it’s a family-friendly and dog-friendly place, handily close to the A30 (five miles away) for travels and days out, and with some splendid views over the Tamar Valley and Dartmoor. Even with all that on offer, there’s a highlight still to come – and that’s the site’s own clubhouse, The Anglers Rest, with a bar and grill that’s open all week during peak season (1 March-12 September) and between Wednesday and Sunday during the low season (13 September-28 February) and weekly live entertainment on Fridays and Saturdays during peak season (generally from 7pm to 10.30pm). The kitchen serves up top-notch food and there’s also a pool table, dartboard, fruit machines and a dance floor to keep the good times rolling. Ice creams, sweets, alcohol and assorted essentials can be picked up at the site shop (they’ve even got doggy ice cream to get four-legged family members in on the holiday vibes…) Other facilities on site include a covered play area and a dog exercise area, along with a coin-operated launderette, a washing-up area and chemical disposal point. The bathroom facilities have baby changing facilities and central heating plus separate male, female and disabled shower areas. Reception is open seven days a week, and the owners live on site so you can always get hold of someone if you need anything.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: We booked last minute for the bank holiday weekend and was our first time tent camping as a family. It was so good we extended our stay. Staff were amazing! Really friendly, kind and couldn’t do enough for us. We didn’t want to leave. Very family friendly, clean and the showers were great and hot! Good evening entertainment and lovely food. The kids made some lovely friends. Lots of places to visit and things to do within a 30min drive. Definitely will be returning.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Friendly staff from the start, very helpful and welcoming. Good pitch size for tent. Park is under a shelter roof, which Is good if it rains. They do a tuck shop 6pm-9pm, all pocket money prices, great selection. Clubhouse is well stocked, good prices too, nice food selection, pool table £1 a go. Nice clean toilets and showers. Laundrette on site too.

Disliked: Nothing

Electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Helpful staff Nice play area for the kids

Disliked: Had to leave early as a few of our party contracted norovirus during our stay. When I mentioned it to staff they seemed to know it was going around but never mentioned it to us on arrival. Facilities weren't cleaned regularly, I only saw one cleaner during our stay. The pot wash area never had hot water available and again wasn't clean. There are 6 showers on site 2 didn't work and the other 2 (in the men's loos) had extrwanly low pressure. To the point that water actually stopped running

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: We are sorry your experience was not the same as others who holidayed on our Park at the same time as yourselves. The facilities are cleaned at 3am every morning and are checked and cleaned regularly during the day, We have not had any other reports of norovirus, and we hope that those affected are now fully recovered. We did have a party who arrived and asked for weak tea for their child who had been sick on the journey, which is what a member of staff mentioned to you. No-one reported broken showers or dirty facilities. Members of staff staying on-site also use those facilities and they have not reported issues either. The pot wash boiler was playing up, and was out of action for a few hours whilst we were waiting for a replacement part. but for those who reported no hot water, we either re-lit the boiler or washed their dishes for them in the Kitchen dishwasher. I know that some unsupervised children made a bit of a mess in the pot wash filling up water pistols and spraying water everywhere, but rather there then in the toilets! We have also spoken with EH regarding our procedures and your concerns.

Would defo recommend. Be back next year if can't get there before!

Local attractions

The only issue with staying close to the Devon/Cornwall border is the possibility of being overwhelmed by options for days out… so perhaps it’s sensible to start somewhat local with a visit to Launceston Castle (10 minutes’ drive) or a day of meeting cute creatures at the Tamar Otter & Wildlife Centre (15 minutes)? Alternatively, of course, you could set forth straight away for the seaside – there’s so much fab coastline around here but you’ll likely find some of the highlights to be the beaches and surf schools of Bude (25 minutes) and Widemouth Bay (half an hour). If you’re more into strolling along cobbled lanes, the fishing villages of Boscastle (the one with the witches museum) and Port Isaac (the one where they filmed Doc Martin) are both within a 45-minute drive. Other coastal spots to check out include Tintagel Castle (40 minutes), a place of much Arthurian legend, and the maritime city of Plymouth (55 minutes), home to the UK’s largest aquarium and a stonking gin distillery.
