  • Tiny family-run site 20 minutes' drive from the north Devon coast
  • A mile and a half to Langtree; 15 minutes to Great Torrington by road
  • Sheltered half-acre grass meadow with a shared kitchenette
Humble, homely and deep in Devon's green interior, Maggie's Meadows is a tiny campsite a mile and a half from the small village of Langtree. Sitting on half an acre of sheltered land, its quiet grassy meadow has room for a handful of pitches, with plenty of space for cars on the hardstanding parking area just a few steps away. There's also a peaceful orchard at this family-run spot, which is surrounded by a classic Devon landscape of farmland and undulating hills. When it comes to facilities, Maggie's Meadows keeps it simple – there's a spick and span portable toilet block with three cubicles plus a covered kitchenette area for communal food prep and washing up. This is a quiet part of the world, but you won't take it long to find things to do – Langtree has an indoor market that runs every Thursday where you can pick up fresh local produce or handmade gifts, while over towards Torrington there's RHS Garden Rosemoor (15 minutes' drive), a celebration of flora in a steep wooded valley with a highly-rated restaurant and tea room. The north Devon coast is also an easy 20-minute drive away. After a good spell of exploring, when you head back to base you can gather around a campfire or rustle up a barbecue and chat about your plans for your next day's adventure. Not in the mood for DIY dinners? You're a five-minute drive from a pub at Stibb Cross.

Local attractions

First up, you might like to head to Great Torrington (15 minutes' drive), a local hub with a public swimming pool, shops and Dartington Crystal, where you can browse for gifts or take a guided tour to see how glass is blown. Need to take the kids somewhere they can run off some energy? A round or two at Survival Paintball (20 minutes) should keep them happy. Walkers, meanwhile, are about a 20 minutes from the spectacular South West Coast Path, which runs past scenic highlights like the cobbled streets of Clovelly (30 minutes), Speke's Mill Mouth Waterfall (35 minutes) and Northam Burrows Country Park (35 minutes). For inland nature-spotting cycles or strolls, there's also the Tarka Trail just over five minutes' drive to the north at Watergate Bridge. For the best beaches, make a beeline for Bude (35 minutes), where there's half a dozen sandy options, or head out for board sports, swimming or a game of rounders at the spacious beach next to the village of Westward Ho! (30 minutes).
