  • Small and basic adults-only campsite on a Devon organic farm
  • Hartland Abbey and the South West Coast Path five minutes’ drive
  • Dark skies site; no-frills kitchenette; books and puzzles to borrow
A teeny-tiny, no-frills adults-only site on an organic working beef farm, Higher Cheristow Farm Campsite has spectacular views of Devon countryside and is five minutes’ drive from Hartland village’s pubs and shops. Approached by traditional, hedge-lined and very narrow Devon lanes, the farm is a haven for wildlife, with lots of natural grasses and wild flowers – so if you need a Devon country hideaway, this is the place for you. The site is miniscule, with a strict limit on numbers, so you’ll never feel crowded; privacy and relaxation are paramount here. Amenities are basic, clean, functional and unheated, comprising a kitchenette (with sink, kettle, microwave, and tea- and coffee-making facilities), showers and toilets all made from up-cycled materials. A communal fridge is available for guest use too. There are also books, puzzles and a video library for your downtime – or indeed any rainy days. Please note that the amenities block is accessed through the farmyard, which can get muddy so suitable footwear is recommended. Fires are allowed in firepits raised off the ground, and two well-behaved dogs on leads are welcome per pitch. There is no street lighting – amazing for stargazing – so please bring a torch.

Electric optional grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: I liked how quiet it was, the toilet/shower block was great, kept tidy and clean, the showers were the best, hot and powerful. The toilet/shower block was part of a cabin which had the pot washing area, you also had use of a microwave and kettle if you needed it and access to jigsaws and some books. I also liked how when you went to the loo there was a little gaggle of geese that waddled over to see you.

Disliked: The pitch that we were allocated was spoilt by the overgrown hedgerow (we were at the bottom end in the corner) it just needed a strimmer taking to it, so that you could see over the fence to see the lovely jersey cows and also the views in the distance.

From the manager: Thank you for reviewing your stay. The ducks are very popular with guests staying on the campsite. They are very friendly indeed. There is always a balance to be had with the amount or not of cutting the grass and strimming the hedges. The wildlife love the nettles, but the guests would like the banks strimmed. I will bear your comments in mind, because, yes there is a lovely view of the countryside beyond the campsite. We do have 3 pitches which do not have a hedgebank, and have wonderful views, but the pitch you stayed in is the most sheltered spot and reserved for tents like yourself.

Electric optional grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: Small campsite and we had the place to ourselves, it was lovely. It is a working farm and there was cows in the next field that came to say hello, ducks and a lovely unusual cat. The owners were very friendly and according and would stop for a chat. They went about their day and we enjoyed watching them. The site is literally in the middle of nowhere, but we like that. The site provided everything you need from kettle to hair dryer. We enjoyed staying at this site

Disliked: Nothing

Electric optional hardstanding and grass touring pitch

Liked: We use our VW camper, travel light and explore by bicycle… Quiet location with no ambient light, so good for star gazing if there is a clear sky. Reasonably sheltered site with good views. Great facilities shed with clean toilets, showers, wash up, kettle, microwave and a radio that sensed entry & played Classic fm. Sounds and life of the farm (cattle can be ‘noisy’ if they’re penned for any reason)

Disliked: A bit tricky to find.

Electric optional hardstanding and grass touring pitch

Liked: Liked everything about this site, small and friendly Shelly and Eric are fantastic hosts. Great pitch, love that you pay for the electric you use. Fantastic facilities, some of the best we've experienced spotlessly clean at all times, with a little radio playing feels almost like a spa. Great kitchen area with fridge, kettle toaster and microwave. Pitch dark at night so great for star gazing but don't forget your torch. Fantastic area for walking with lots to see and do. With this campsite it's all about the little touches thanks Shelly for making us feel so welcome

Disliked: That we weren't staying longer. We will be back.

From the manager: Thank you for your words of praise. It was a pleasure to meet you both. We are blessed with amazing dark skies. The moon last night looked a real picture. Best wishes.

Electric optional grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: It was peaceful and we had all the facilities we needed with bringing our portable camping stove and sponges for washing up. The owners were very kind and accommodating and there were only 6 other people on this site at its busiest. Close to some lovely areas of Devon and we were able to take a walk on Exmoor on the way home. Fantastic place.

From the manager: Lovely to meet you both. Thank you for choosing to stay here on your short break on this adult only campsite. Delighted you were able to enjoy some of our beautiful scenery. The campsite is a bit remote with lovely views, which adds to its charm. Warm wishes.

Electric optional grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: I loved our stay here, its a really cosy, homely feel and super quiet and peaceful too. Toilets and showers were lovely and clean and there's never too many people on the campsite at once. The owners were wonderful and helpful and we definitely want to go back, its a lovely location with cute villages nearby and lovely beautiful cliff top walks not far away. I don't particularly enjoy camping but i did enjoy camping here for sure, the most relaxed I felt for sure! Highly recommend!

Electric optional grass touring pitch

Liked: We stayed at Higher Chepstow Farm for 3 days. The site is wonderful, it is peaceful with nighttime dark Skys to enthuse your inner astronomer. Your host Michelle is a lovely lady and makes you feel very welcome. The facilities are keep very clean at all time with showers and toilets and a kitchen area if needed. If you need wifi although the site does not provide an actual wifi signal the 4g Phone signal is excellent with speeds above 30mbps for internet access. We were there during storm Antoni and had to stay an extra day due to the disruption to travel. Our host was very accommodating with this. It was our 40th Wedding anniversary and we had said that we wanted to go out and get a cream tea as part of our celebration. Michelle very kindly made us scones and delivered a cream tea to our motorhome. They were some of the best scones we have ever tasted. Ducks wander around the farm yard and into the site they are a wonderful site to behold. If you are looking for a modern busy site, this location is not for you. If you are looking for a bar and music, this location is not for you. If you want play area and loads of kids playing, again this site is not for you. However, if you are looking for a peaceful tranquil site on an organic farm with a friendly host and clean and adequate facilities, no children and likeminded campers with excellent scenic walks within the vicinity then we highly recommend Higher Chepstow Farm as a wonderful location to spend your vacation..

Disliked: Storm Antonio but nothing about the location

Electric optional grass touring pitch

Liked: Love this beautiful place, part of a working beef farm with very friendly owners . The campsite is a field, part of which is left wild. Immaculate facilities with everything you need provided including a fridge and microwave. The ducks wander around in the evening and there is a big adjoining field for the dogs to chase in. It's so peaceful and the view of the stars at night is amazing. Couldn't recommend a better place to get away from everything!

From the manager: Thank you. We are so blessed to live in such a lovely place where you can see stars and the moon on a clear night, and where we can live and work in peace and harmony with nature. With warm wishes.
