  • Wild-style camping on a 16-acre Devon woodland site near Denbury
  • A 10-minute drive to Dartmoor National Park; 25 minutes to Paignton
  • Peaceful and private landscaped pitches among mature oak trees
The brains behind Barhams Woodland Camping have previously been responsible for one of Europe’s top hostels for outdoor lovers, so you can be sure they’ve got a pretty good idea of what makes a good base for an outdoor break. At this Devon site they describe the setup as ‘wild camping – with one or two of the rough edges taken away’. And that’s a great way to describe this place, set among 16 acres of woodland a mile from Denbury. It’s a laidback place that’s all about appreciating things like peaceful campfire evenings, fresh air and birdsong – but it’s also got compost toilets, gas-powered showers and a washing-up area to make life a little more comfortable. Each of the pitches here has been thoughtfully landscaped to make the most of the setting and provide plenty of privacy. That means they’ve all got their own individual character – but what they’ve got in common is a setting under the canopy of tall oak trees that have been in place for more than a hundred years. That canopy can be handy for sheltering you from passing rain showers, but there are also enough gaps between the branches to make sure some sunlight breaks through. In another handy little touch, the car park has been set up to provide an allocated space for each pitch – a useful feature for peace of mind that you’ll always find a space. The south Devon surroundings are just as fine here, too – the edge of Dartmoor National Park is about 10 minutes’ drive and the coast about 25 minutes, so you’ll have plenty of choice when it comes to walking trails, outdoor activities and family attractions.

Non-electric hardstanding campervan pitch (maximum 6 metres)

Liked: Wonderful set up in lovely wood which is perfect for camping as there's still plenty of daylight amongst the trees.

Disliked: The camp site is new so has a few teething problems. The access road was very muddy, it took four attempts to reverse into my camper van pitch, made harder by the pitch being higher than the road, lots of wheel spinning! There was another van next to me which had similar trouble. Three of the camper van pitches are directly opposite the parking area for cars so you do feel a bit like your camping in the parking area. The water pump is very noisy and is audible every time a tap is run, a quieter pump or acoustic box would be a good remedy.

From the manager: Thank you for your review Matt, the track, parking bays, and campervan standings have all been completely re-laid, so no mud or wheel spinning going forward. The camper van pitches are now all located within the woodland and away from the parking or entrance to the camp. The water pump has also been updated, so peace has been restored. Thank you for the feedback and we are pleased to be able to act on them and make changes for 2024. Annie

Non-electric forest floor tent pitch (four person)

Liked: Fantastic location, in amongst the nature, felt like old school camping. Lovely spacious pitches, not too close to anyone else, each with its own campfire pit. It was very easy to read the map of where your pitch was, very nicely done. The facilities are good, hot showers and clean toilets, and they have been built very nicely, lovely touches everywhere in the camp to enjoy every bit of the nature. The owners are very friendly and welcoming and they were very helpful with us. We enjoyed it so much the first night that we stayed another!

Disliked: As much as we loved it, there were just a few things that might need tweaking. For example, no hand wash is provided, only sanitiser which is not the best when using outdoor facilities. The road leading into the camp ground is very muddy once it has rained, this wasn't a problem, however our shoes were very muddy going into our tent. Perhaps having a shoe cleaner/scrubber would be useful for those camping? But none of this would stop us from returning.

Non-electric forest floor tent pitch (four person)

Liked: This was a A* experience. As long as you open to the real side of wild camping you will love this. Fire pitch and tent patch in your own little designated area. Cute and eco friendly camp. Remote but worth it.

Non-electric forest floor tent pitch (four person)

Liked: I've done a lot of wild camping, hiking, and glamping in my years and this place has to be an almost perfect balance between a wild camping experience and camping with all the mod-cons. It is off-grid and even the owners are not on-site. It has basic showers and toilets but they are warm and clean. The pitches are secluded and amongst lovely mature Oaks You sit and listen to the birds, with your campfire going, and feel your stress ebbing away. I was blown away by the price, for the size of each pitch and the level of privacy I would have expected far higher charges.

Disliked: VERY MINOR GRIPES: The showers were VERY hot and one had a timer that was about 2 seconds lol. Not enough wheelbarrows for everyone even on a relatively quiet day. Don't bring tons of unnecessary stuff like one family I saw with a MASSIVE double airbed that the had to carry from the parking area as it needed the car to inflate it.

Non-electric hardstanding campervan pitch (maximum 6 metres)

Liked: Beautiful site, a different type of camping with a wild feel! Facilities are faultless, clean, compostable toilets and hot showers. Liked the opportunity to have a fire pit and bbq, thank you!

Disliked: Did feel that our campervan pitch wasn’t very private, with cars parked opposite (lots of comings and goings) and being on the access road. I think if we returned we would either bring a tent or request a different pitch if possible. The tent pitches are more secluded and tucked away.
