  • Rural wild camping site for motorhomes with views over Dartmoor
  • A 10-minute drive to Castle Drogo; short walk to the Two Moors Way
  • Farm cider, fresh eggs, beef and wood for firepits sold on site
Moors, gorges and castles… such sights might stitch together a part of your stay in the Dartmoor National Park. With the peaceful Wallen Down Farm as your crash pad, you’ll soon find that the local area is crawling with walks, including the Two Moors Way and Mariner’s Way within walking distance, and the grizzly Castle Drogo is 10 minutes’ drive away. Wild camping’s the way here and the site is just made for motorhomes, so you’ll get to use your van’s facilities to the full - that means there's no electricity, water or sewage dump. You won’t have to worry about any nosy neighbours, as it’s a single-van site only, where views over the open countryside and Dartmoor National Park will do for company. You’ll be joining the ranks of a working farm and there are certainly all the flavours of the farm. You see, the site sells fresh eggs and pedigree ruby red Devon beef (some sure barbecue essentials), as well as wood and farm cider (the makings of a successful firepit). The skies are very dark above Wallen Down Farm, as this area has famously low levels of light pollution. You won’t want to completely shrug off the outside world, though, and handily, the site is 10 minutes’ drive from the A30 from Exeter to Cornwall (making the site a timely journey break on the way around the South West perhaps). Pubs, restaurants and wacky shops reside in Chagford, a scenic stannary town 35 minutes’ walk away, and there are other holes around the local villages, including a higher-end restaurant in Gidleigh (10 minutes’ drive).

Local attractions

Mariner’s cap at the ready… you might feel quite the part along the Mariner’s Way (around 40 minutes’ walk). This ancient route was once the rite of passage for sailors making their way down from North Devon ports, who stopped at farms, pubs and villages along the way. The Two Moors Way (half an hour’s walk) is another age-old path, this time along parts of the river Teign, stopping at Castle Drogo (10 minutes’ drive), a National Trust site with an ancient gorge, wildlife trails and terrace garden. While you’re up this way, you might want to cross over the river on the 17th-century stone arch Fingle Bridge (15 minutes). Those of you who go starry-eyed over gorges and other natural scenery may also want to pay a visit to Lydford Gorge (35 minutes). The deepest gorge in the South West, this National Trust site is home to a 35-metre waterfall (a right old spot to go googly-eyed). A fan of a party too? You won’t be too far from a boogie if you time your visit right, as the site for the Chagstock Festival (five minutes) and South Zeal (10 minutes) village’s annual folk festival are both close by.
