  • Site with its own private airstrip with restored aircraft
  • Within easy reach of Branscombe beach, Seaton and Beer
  • Safe and enclosed play area; games room; plenty of space for play
Branscombe Airfield and Camping is four miles from Sidmouth, Seaton and Beer, on the edge of Branscombe village and in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty on Lyme Bay. The site has its own private airstrip, home to a range of vintage and classic aircraft, including a Stearman PT-17 and a Zlín 526. The resident pilots and restoration team are happy to show guests the current lineup when they are available; you may also see occasional flight activity (when pilot availability and weather/ground conditions permit). Branscombe has plenty of wide open space with views of Devon countryside and distant sea views. There are refurbished toilets and free showers, as well as a modern utilities block, a washing-up area and a launderette with a washing machine and tumble dryer. There's also a safe and enclosed play area with plenty of space to play football and other outdoor activities, and a small indoor games room is also available. Foodies can head out to two pubs within a mile and a half – one within a short 20-minute stroll.

What customers say

Lovely site with good pitches & views. Staff are a great help. Airfield is a treat. Some bits are a bit old but kept spotless. Nice and quiet, mostly, bar the odd bit of carry-on. Handy for getting about to see the sights.

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked Loved the shop, had little things we needed. Check in process was so easy! Liked you could choose where to pitch up.
Loved that they had a bar and pizza van on Sunday night (bank holiday) with a singer! Made such a lovely evening!

Disliked Toilets and showers could be slightly better but loved that they had port a loos dotted around the airfield so you didn’t have to walk really far for a wee

Electric grass pitch

Liked The welcome was great and the information issued was also very useful. the pitch sizes are great and the facilities always clean and usable. The pop-up bar and pizza on Sunday were very enjoyable as was the sing along. The dog walking area was definitely a good idea

Disliked Can't say there was anything that I could list as a dislike.

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked Just back from an amazing weekend stay at Brancombe, we travelled a few hours to get there we arrived early and asked if we could check in early we were told we could which was a great help to us, we were greeted at reception with a lovely welcome.
We chose a lovely pitch, plenty of space there were plenty of toilets situated around the site, lovely hot showers that were cleaned regularly. The dog paddock was huge a great space for our dog to run around. The pizza van was a great added extra, couldn’t have asked for anything more, would highly recommend!

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked Owners were really lovely
Campsite was peaceful with great views
Amenities looked great but didn’t use them
Shop had lots of basics and camping items if you forgot anything plus toys for the kids
Location was great to get to the beaches nearby

Disliked Would’ve been ideal to be pre warned about the single track road which leads to the campsite. Was hairy at times!

From the manager: Thank you for your review on your 1 nights stay with us. The road into us is normal for this part of the country with plenty of passing places and the local bus and lorries use it daily

Electric grass pitch

Liked Great fun watching the planes take off. Tracey was lovely and welcoming. Good games room for the kids. Good location between sidmouth and beer.

Disliked Chris was pretty unkind to my kids, I went with them to check for myself at one point when they asked for change to spend on the pool table, he didn't say a word to them, really unwelcoming sadly. My son put his bike in the games room (our fault as we drill it into him to leave it safe) bearing in mind this games room was a little rough around the edges, a worker came in and instead of asking him nicely to put it outside he asked him if he thought it was clever bringing it into the room, very passive aggressive and just not nice. There are also not enough facilities on this site, only 4 unisex showers, 1 male and 1 female with 2 or 3 toilets. Very dirty at times. Although we were there bank holiday weekend when they opened the airstrip for extra campers. The approach to this site is very tight, make sure you research which way to come because if you're in a motorhome or with a caravan and you take the wrong route in you are in serious trouble.

From the manager: We are sorry you feel this way, this is certainly a first for us saying Chris was not kind to your children. We need to however point out there are more toilets and showers than you mention in your review, as for the approach into us, the bus and larger motorhomes get into us with no issues

Electric grass pitch

Liked We've been here twice now and the kids love the open space and the planes.
Its clean and tidy.
Very good location
Quiet at night

Disliked There was no where to bath/wash our baby. He went nearly a week without a bath.
The campsite could do with another block of toilets. Theres only 4 female toilets for the whole campsite, I understand its a smaller campsite but it just didnt seem enough.
The shop was closed ALOT of the time even when it said on the door it would be open.
The ground is very very hard, we had rock pegs and found it very difficult to put the tent up.
The park needs some TLC, the play equipment is very old and can easily splinter a childs hand. The kids didnt enjoy the park especially as it was for under 7s which seems a shame for slightly older children.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Its a shame you fell this way after being here twice before knowing we have no baby washing facilities. There are actually only 2 female toilets and a gents all the rest are unisex. The convince shop sign says its open when we are in it or core hours, and was not closed ALOT as you say, as we are in it nearly all the time at this time of year. The ground is especially hard this year as we have had no rain for months

Local attractions

Stay at Branscombe at the beginning of August to frolic at the world-famous Sidmouth Folk Week, or mosey along to this part of Devon at any time of year to ramble and rockpool on Branscombe Mouth beach, be tempted by tasty treats in the thatched roof restaurant or take a boat out to land some mackerel and pollock for supper. Branscombe village has the Old Forge, the Old Bakery and the Norman St. Winifred Church to see, while the regency town of Sidmouth five miles to the west has a sauna, cinema, indoor pool, restaurants and gift shops as well as beaches for splashing and sunbathing. The fishing village of Beer is nearby: this sheltered beach is the spot for catching the sun’s rays, and if you don’t want to angle yourself from a boat to cast off, you can buy some fresh fish on the beach before getting on your mining helmet to explore the Beer Quarry Caves or climbing the hill (sans helmet) to the model railway exhibition and gardens at Pecorama. Cavers and trainspotters can also try the Kents Cavern Underground Caves and the South Devon Railway, both at Torquay. Devon day trips include browsing for lace in the market town of Honiton, taking a tram from Seaton along the River Axe for birdwatching at the estuary, fossil-hunting at Lyme Regis, history hunting at Exeter Cathedral and wandering the National Trust walks over Exmoor and Dartmoor. For the small fliers, Crealy Adventure Park, Paignton Zoo and Plymouth’s National Marine Aquarium should have them soaring.
