  • No-frills site on a working farm on the edge of Dartmoor National Park
  • Plymouth 25 minutes’ drive; Bovisand and Wembury beaches half an hour
  • Dogs and barbecues are allowed; views of Plymouth Sound
Ready to leave the trappings of modern life behind and embrace nature in favour of something more natural? For a back-to-basics, wild-camping experience, you can book a grassy pitch at Lower Collard Farm, a dog-friendly pop-up site on a Devon working farm on the edge of Dartmoor National Park. And if not everybody in your party is on the same page as you with regards to the ‘no frills’ approach, they might relent knowing that there is a café within a five-minute walk. What’s more, the Plymouth suburb of Plympton (with its pubs, supermarkets and other urban draws) is a 10-minute drive away. You might also be able to persuade them with the promise of a day at the seaside, with Bovisand and Wembury beaches within a half-hour drive. For some, the site might be a little on the spartan side (there are no loos and no showers). However, what Lower Collard Farm lacks in amenities, it makes up for in views (you can see Plymouth Sound from here) and spectacular scenery for walking. There are shaded trails exploring Cann Wood, or you can head to Lee Moor, a former quarry dotted with ponds (both five minutes’ drive). If you have a bike, you could ride Drake's Trail Cycle Path (15 minutes), in Dartmoor. Barbecues are allowed (and there’s a greengrocer within five minutes’ walk of the site), but remember to bring your own equipment.

Local attractions

From the world’s largest cat (the Amur tiger) to the world’s largest rodent (the capybara), with quite a few other animals in between (among them, zebras, wallabies and cheetahs), you’ll see them all at Dartmoor Zoo (15 minutes’ drive). As you stroll through the grounds, you’ll also be able to admire exotic plants and dozens of species of camellias, plus rewilded areas that act as a magnet for insects and birds. For a change of scenery, spend a day checking out the harbour area in Plymouth (25 minutes). Here you can visit the National Marine Aquarium, the Royal Citadel and The Mayflower Museum, with a model of the ship that sailed to America in the 17th century. Then head to the clifftop Hoe Park for a rest with a view, or to Tinside Lido for a swim in the Art Deco pool. The halls of Cotehele (45 minutes), a National Trust-run property dating back to Tudor times, are filled with period furniture, tapestries and armour. The site also has large grounds with orchards, wildflower meadows and a lily pond. And last but not least: dogs are welcome here.
