Okehampton Youth Hostel: The non-electric pitches in the morning after waking up.

General

  • In the grounds of an activity centre on the edge of Dartmoor
  • High ropes course, archery, climbing and watersports all available
  • Access to Dartmoor and Granite Way cycle track; bike hire on site

If you're on the hunt for active hols, it's virtually a cert that you’ll like a stay at Okehampton Youth Hostel, at the same setting as Adventure Okehampton, an activity centre with family sessions running every day during the school holidays. The pitches are on a flat and enclosed field in the grounds of the hostel and all guests have full access to hostel facilities including bathrooms, a self-catering kitchen, TV and games rooms, as well as free wifi, a café and shop.

Through the activity centre and your small adventurers can have a go at mountain boarding, archery and scaling the climbing wall or ropes, with watersports including surfing, gorge scrambling, kayaking and canoeing on offer; true headers for heights can also have a go at the Big Oke Abseil. When you're up for exploring Dartmoor, there's direct access to the moors and the Granite Way cycle path (with bike hire available for mountain bikes, e-bikes and kids' trailers).

If there's six or more of you up for a challenge, you can book a group activity together at the site at any time, for hen and stag parties, weekends away and just because. If your fellow travellers aren't all up for such outdoor pursuits, during school holidays the site allows bookings for individual daredevils and groups smaller than six, so there's nothing to hold you back if you want to give something wild a whirl.

A tad too much adrenaline? Plenty of peeps come to Okehampton for a chillsome time too: there are activities like walks, craft and quiz nights and campfire sessions laid on in the evenings, or you could go for proper Devon downtime in the on-site licensed restaurant to demolish locally sourced food, local beers and cider.

This site is a member of YHA group.

Please note

No cars/motorbikes by the pitch/unit. All cars must be parked in the designated area.

The restaurant is open between 01/07 and 31/08.

At least one of the party members must be aged 21 or over.

Please note that activities are subject to extra charges. For more information please check terms and conditions in the 'Policies' tab.

    Not really much to like

    Disliked:

Pictures advertised were not like the place, didn't realise when they said shower block and toilet was a single port a loo outside which wasn't cleaned regular, on arrival of first night we wasn't given a code to get into the building to access toilet or shower or kitchen, activities inside the grounds like a wooded play area was very old but wasn't allowed in it which kids obviously want to use, downstairs disabled shower was constantly flooded and dirty couldn't put clothes anywhere without getting soaked, very expensive for two tents with nothing to do and all activities were very expensive

From the manager...

Thank you for your feedback.
All guests have access to the showers and toilet facilities within the youth hostel and the code for entry to the center is given to all our camping guests on check in and payment. The accessible bathroom is designed for people using a wheelchair so is a wet-room.
Our grounds do not have any play equipment for the use of guests, the ' wooded play area' is for groups paying for the session with our activity team. Although within the building we do offer a free games room with TV, pool table and table tennis amongst others.
The other sessions that Adventure Okehampton offer such as rock climbing, canoeing or gorge scrambling are priced from £25 per person for a 2 & 1/2 hour session and bike hire from £16 for a full day. I am sorry your felt these were too expensive for your group.

    Disliked:

The awful noise from the train yard next door started at 04:00, ended up having to physically move the tent to try and get away from the noise. Two diggers loading multiple trailers with rocks/gravel at that time was totally unacceptable- very surprised that the camp site was not at the other side of the building. As clearly this is normal noise/activity. Oh and various machines kept tooting horns!!!!

Simple, but easy camping spot right on the doorstep of Dartmoor05/30/2021

Chill & simple. Perfect for a walking trip on the doorstep of some insanely beautiful walks. While I didn't head down into town...this would also be a great site to stay for having the walks in the day, pubs in the evening.

For a Friday bank holiday it was cheap, it was quiet & it was enough away from the town that I enjoyed my stay. The staff were friendly, and the little shop was good for grabbing a quick drink when I needed it.

    Disliked:

I mean, look...if you want a wide open pitch without any lights & quiet in the middle of nowhere with perfect toilets you're not going to like this site. It's right by the town, A road adjacent & there's a bright light I assume for the station? But...if you didn't want those things, you can pay more & be further from civilisation. It's certainly not somewhere the base yourself for a week...but for a stop over or a basic base? It's great.

I stayed here one night, didn't care about not showering, & the portaloos were just fine for me. It's location is unrivaled, and I'm kinda sad I had my anxious dog with me stopping me for heading into town - which is minutes away down the hill.

I also wouldn't stay here in bad weather. The ground felt very saturated.

Local attractions

Stick close to home to explore Okehampton and its surrounding villages, roam around Dartmoor, head to the north or south Devon coasts or cross the border into Cornwall – depending on your energy levels after all that abseiling.

The town of Okehampton is on the edge of Dartmoor and has the Museum of Dartmoor Life in its 18th-century mill telling the tale of those who have lived and worked in the area for centuries past (there are often evening visits available for those who’ve been swinging from ropes all day).

During the day – partly because it’s only open until five or six and partly because it’s haunted – take a trip to medieval Okehampton Castle, the ruins of Devon’s biggest castle. The 1920s Castle Drogo, with formal garden, tours and events including vintage car rallies and fancy dress, is about 20 minutes’ drive from the hostel.

From Okehampton there are nearby villages galore to explore and walks from the hostel over the moors, woodlands, tors and ancient monuments of Dartmoor.

Take the Belstone Walk past the healing stone (lie on it and think of the part of your body that needs fixed), or walk along the Meldon Viaduct to Black-a-Tor Copse to take in bluebell woods and an ancient oak woodland nature reserve: go here in May to see the best of the bluebells and rare plants.

Flower fans will also like the RHS gardens at Rosemoor 20 minutes’ drive from Okehampton; there are over 40 other gardens in Devon if this sort of stuff makes you bloom.

Devon – and Cornwall – have seaside towns, cracking cuisine, piles of stately homes and some of the best beaches in the country, most within an hour’s drive or less.

The Eden Project is about an hour’s drive along the A30 and Bude and Newquay are both reachable from Okehampton by bus. Keep Sundays free too: there’s a train direct from the hostel to Exeter to mosey around the castle, cathedral, Roman remains and shops.
