  • Riverside site in the grounds of a pub-restaurant
  • A couple of minutes’ drive from the edge of Dartmoor National Park
  • A 10-minute drive from Newton Abbot and 30 from Torquay
Want to feel like you’re getting a secluded and peaceful getaway without having to give up being close to other people? At Dartmoor Halfway Inn, a family-friendly site in the grounds of a pub-restaurant 10 minutes’ drive from the town of Newton Abbot in Devon, South West England, you get the best of both worlds. Two minutes from the edge of Dartmoor National Park, The Halfway Inn is well placed for exploration – you can walk, cycle, ride, canoe or climb your way around the park, travel from scenic village to scenic village, or learn about the history of the area. The site and pub are dog friendly too, so ramblers should feel free to bring their canine companions along for the walk. On site, kick back by the river Lemon, which passes just behind the campgrounds, or relax in the open green field – kids who aren’t quite ready to sit still for the evening can burn off any residual energy in the on-site playground. When the whole family is ready for dinner, stroll over to the Halfway Inn for a slap-up meal, then knock back a few beers or a couple of glasses of wine – or juice for the kids – and toddle back to where you’re spending the night less than 200 metres away. If you’d prefer a change of scenery, there are plenty of other restaurants in Newton Abbot and within 10 minutes’ drive of Halfway Inn.

What customers say

A lovely campsite with spacious, private pitches. The pub's food and staff get a big thumbs-up. Facilities are clean, though the few toilets can be a squeeze. Expect some road noise. Handy spot for seeing the sights.

Non-electric grass tent pitch (basic)

Liked The restaurant, nice personel and good food.

Disliked Facilities, 2 showers which were good for camping standards but only one real toilet for the whole camping and two mobile toilets. Quite close the a medium road. I sleep with earplugs and definitely needed them.

Non-electric hardstanding and grass pitch

Liked We stayed 3 nights and they were very accommodating with sorting out the booking so we could have the same pitch.
We have 2 dogs and we found it a good place to walk them and give them some exercise.
The pitch was very big as well as we have a big motorhome.
WiFi is really good
Pub has lovely food and we didn't feel too badly priced.

Disliked Not enough proper toilets for the whole site as only a couple.

Electric hardstanding and grass pitch (comfort)

Liked Great well maintained
You have little seperate areas divided by hedges so you have more privacy
Good facilities
Staff was nice
WiFi on site as it is a no signal area

Disliked There is only one toilet cubicle but tbh the 2 nights I stayed there i havent actually had to wait to use the toilet and there is an accessible toilet if you want privacy so I can't actually complain but I guess would have been nice to have more than one

Fully-serviced hardstanding and grass pitch (premium)

Liked The campsite was lovely and clean, the plots that we had were very private with hedges either side which was nice to have. The facilities are all in great condition and cleaned often. The pub is amazing, the food, staff and drinks were really nice.

Electric hardstanding and grass pitch (comfort)

Liked - Location - easy to find and get to, great position to visit local area, shops, attractions and 10 minutes from Dartmoor park.

- Decent facilities: Smart clean toilets and showers, washing up area, plenty of grey waste areas, Brilliant disabled wet room/toilet

- Private pitches - hedgerows between each pitch.

- Good pub grub!

- Mobile phone and portable WiFi signal was okay for us (3 network) but others pitches around us were getting no signal.

- Staff were friendly and helpful.

Disliked This list wasn't a deal breaker for us, but just wanted to put it out there for others so they're fully aware:

-Pub a little pricey for food (~£18 - £25 for a main meal)

-WiFi is intermittent as it's Skylink - so when its cloudy it's really slow, but when sunny it's a little faster (around 8Mbps when I speed tested it).

- Only 1 toilet in both men's and women's toilet block.

- Chemical waste area is exposed and right next to pot wash area - it could do with a barrier between them.

- Sitemap was incorrect for water points and most of the offerings (BBQ and Breakfast parcels) were not actually available anymore, despite being listed for purchase. I had a chat with the relief manager regarding this, explaining the water area issues and what was incorrect, and they are updating it - so hopefully this will be corrected soon.

- Cost of tumble dryers is expensive. £1 for 10 minutes. We lost £9 for an hour and a half and our towels were still soaked!

- Would appreciate a pub discount if stopping on site. Not a dislike, more a suggestion.

Local attractions

You can barely turn a corner in this part of Devon without coming face to face with a stately manor – Bradley, Compton Castle, Greenway, Castle Drogo, Coleton Fishacre, Cockington Court, Torre Abbey and Dartington Hall are all with 45 minutes’ drive, and a visit to the spectacular 16-sided A la Ronde, 35 minutes away, is highly recommended. Tipplers might like to make the trip to Buckfast Abbey outside Buckfastleigh (10 minutes), though you won’t be able to do tours or tastings at the factory. If the Abbey doesn’t get you steaming, head to the South Devon Railway and climb aboard the vintage train, or abandon alcohol-related puns altogether and head to the Buckfast Butterfly Farm and Dartmoor Otter Sanctuary. Fawlty Towers fans will be keen to learn that Torquay is less than 30 minutes away. Although you can no longer visit the real-life hotel behind the comedy, there’s plenty to keep you entertained: follow the Agatha Christie Mile to get a glimpse of some of the spots that inspired the murder mystery maven, dive below the Devon coast in the prehistoric Kents Cavern, or play giant at Babbacombe Model Village.
