  • Friendly site on a Devon working farm just outside Ivybridge
  • A 10-minute drive to Dartmoor; 20 minutes to Mothecombe beach
  • Meet the sheep, cows and pigs on site
Want to check out a little slice of proper farm life, spending your days watching the cows, sheep and pigs do their thing, and starting your morning off gathering fresh eggs for breakfast? Make your way to the family-run site at West Worthele Farm and all of this should be on the cards. This friendly spot is part of a working farm in the Devon countryside, and you’re welcome to have a look around while you’re here and ask any burning questions you may have about farming life (you’re only asked to ensure that kids aren’t left unsupervised around the farm, as farm life does involve various hazards as well as cute animals). And when you’re not strolling around the farm? This location is a great one for getting out and about around Devon’s countryside and coastline – it’s just outside the town of Ivybridge, known as the Gateway to Dartmoor, so there are plenty of walks and outdoor activities over there to start with. It’s also not far to the south Devon coast for walks on the South West Coast Path or beach days in the likes of Mothecombe and Wonwell (both within 20 minutes’ drive). That proximity to Ivybridge is also handy on the practicalities front, as it puts the town’s shops and other amenities within five minutes’ drive. A similar mile-long journey gets you to the village of Ermington, which has a restaurant, a pub, a village shop and a lovely park for the kids. Back at base, it’s a simple setup with just portable toilets and a fresh water tap, but you’re welcome to bring along a barbecue (perhaps picking up a steak or two at the farm to chuck on the grill?).

Local attractions

Coming to south Devon in search of some seaside time? Set off to Mothecombe beach (20 minutes’ drive) for rockpooling and swims at one of the area’s quieter stretches, or take a short woodland walk to reach the sands of Wonwell beach (20 minutes). Thurlestone (half an hour) is another good bet, as is Bigbury-on-Sea (25 minutes) where you can hire watersports kit or ride the sea tractor out to Burgh Island. Looking inland, there are walks galore in Dartmoor National Park (10 minutes), plus visits to The Donkey Sanctuary Ivybridge (five minutes), Dartmoor Zoo (15 minutes) and the National Trust site Saltram (20 minutes). For more family days out, head towards Plymouth (20 minutes) to bounce at Jump Plymouth, meet sea beasts at the National Marine Aquarium and get hands-on at The Box (a particularly cool interactive museum). The rides, indoor/outdoor play areas and falconry displays at Woodlands Family Theme Park (half an hour) are also likely to be popular among all ages.
