  • Quiet rural site on a working farm 10 minutes' drive from Honiton
  • A 15-minute drive from Seaton, Sidmouth and the South West Coast Path
  • Farm shop and tea room on site for homemade meals and takeaway food
Foodies who fancy a farm break, step this way… Bovey's Down Farm is a place where it’s possible to eat very well indeed. This rural site on a working beef farm in the East Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, 10 minutes’ drive from Honiton. And with that setting comes some splendid feasting material: pick up home-cooked cakes, pies, traditional pasties and homemade burgers from the farmhouse kitchen to eat at the picnic area, or settle in for drinks, lunches, cream teas and evening meals in the tea room or beer garden. You can also acquire bread, ribeye steaks and gluten-free sausages from the site for an evening barbecue or campfire brekkie. Once suitably fed and watered, there’s plenty to do nearby: you can get down to the Devon coast (and the resorts of Sidmouth and Seaton) in about 15 minutes’ drive, get out and about for walks/bike rides on the many country lanes and bridleways in the area or play a round of golf a couple of miles away. Getting a taste of farm life is pretty straightforward too: guests can join owner Gerald for a walking tour to meet the Aberdeen Angus cattle, ducks and hens and pick up tips on the wildlife that can be spotted around the place (lots of birdlife and the occasional fox or badger…) Facilities on site include toilets, showers, a launderette, a washing-up area and a free wifi connection to help you plan all those days out.

What customers say

A lovely, rural spot with grand views. Guests loved the clean loos, the grand owners, and the grub. Pitches can be a bit sloped or stony, and you might hear cars now and then, but most reckon it's a grand place for a chill break.

Electric grass pitch

Liked Beautiful views .

Disliked Being forgotten about and having to find my own pitch. Not being offered a refund when I clearly did not use an electric pitch. Being expected to park in an area clearly unsuitable due to the sloping ground.

Electric grass pitch

Liked Lovely site. Great views and easy access to Sidmouth, Seaton, Beer, Honiton, Exmouth, Exeter etc. Great facilities. Easy to get to if towing a caravan. We booked late this year and could not get any of our usual CCC sites. This is a great site, although bigger than what we would normally go for.

Disliked Unfortunately, there was a large group of people in 4 tents all together, and the noise from them was horrendous. When we got there they was blaring out music from a massive speaker/sound system, and had taken over the whole of the area with a bouncy castle etc. I did ask if we could have another pitch, but they were all full. We had to stay out most nights until 10pm as we could not face going back to the noise. One night it went on until 2am. They thought nothing of shouting to each other across the campsite, and also f'ing and blinding even though there was lots of smaller children about. Absolutely no consideration for the other campers. I do believe other people did complain, but it made no difference. This did ruin our time there, otherwise it would have been lovely.

Electric grass pitch

Liked The site was lovely great views facilities and pitch sizes. Owners are lovely and the swallows nest is fantastic

Disliked Unfortunately there was a group of 4 tents all together and they had music blaring for 8.5hours despite owners and people asking them to turn it down still they carried on. It did mean we didn’t have a peaceful stay which was a shame

Electric grass pitch

Liked We were initially on a level pitch. which was good as we were in a caravan. The toilet facilities were rather old, but clean and well kept. There was no road noise. There was plenty of area to walk our dog. Free washing machine, fridge freezer and washing machine on site.

Disliked When we arrived we were put on the first field on the left, there was a large party of people with many children, which we were a bit wary about, but there was no excessive noise, and the children played around, very well behaved and quiet. Then after about 3 days they packed up and left while we were out,we got back and there were 5 huge tents, children and adults. We had never heard such a noise, it was like walking into a festival, shouting because their music was so loud they couldn't hear one another speak. We went down and asked the site owner to speak to,them and turn the noise down, which they did for about 10 minutes! This went on until 11 o'clock at night , when my husband and I asked them to turn it down, they were also letting fireworks off. The next morning by 9am, the reggae music was pounding out again, so we went and asked the owners to move us, which they did. This new field was much quieter. We didn't really expect to spend a half day of our holiday packing up and moving pitches, through no fault of our own!

Local attractions

Once you’ve met the animals on site, get set to say hi to some more furry pals at The Donkey Sanctuary (10 minutes’ drive) before greeting some rather more exotic beasts at Axe Valley Wildlife Park (20 minutes) and Yarak Birds of Prey (half an hour). Trading countryside for coast is a fine idea for a day or two as well – it’ll take you around 15 minutes to drive down to Seaton or Sidmouth for beach days, paddles and strolls on the South West Coast Path. Lovely Lyme Regis (25 minutes) is another fab option – sign up for fishing trips here and you might be lucky enough to take home a fistful of mackerel for tea. Got a bit more time to fill? How about a day of horse riding (five minutes), floral wanders at Burrow Farm Gardens (20 minutes) and Bicton Park Botanical Gardens (25 minutes) or a whole heap of outdoor rides, indoor soft play areas and shows at Crealy Theme Park (half an hour)? Lyme Bay Winery is 20 minutes away too, should you need a tipple to go with your evening barbecue…
